Description
The year is 1910. Bathed in pale Spring sunlight, the small fishing port of Illsmouth is a sleepy New England town where time seems to stand still. Appearances can be very deceiving, however .... Beneath the peaceful tranquility of this small village, a horrifying truth lingers.

Whispers in a dusty, secluded library ripple with fear as questions of the past are brought into the present. Is there a link between the return of Halley's comet and the resurgence of the Great Ancients who once dominated the land in a reign of terror? Legend tells tales of an ancient ritual ground, hidden deep in the shadows of the tangled forest, marked by an ornate and mysterious cross. Once, long ago, this site was the stage for wild and terrifying rites that no one dare speak of, lest they suffer the wrath of the Ancients.

Why are the townspeople of Illsmouth struck by such shattering terror? Why are they drawn to the ancient ritual grounds after so many years? What has released this curse from its deep sleep to play havoc upon the souls of innocent people?

You'll take on the role of John T. Carter, a brilliant young astronomer, piecing together the puzzling history of the village and its cryptic inhabitants. Incredibly realistic action and supernatural chaos intertwine to draw players deep into the puzzling mysteries within the Shadow of the Comet.

Fairly Awful

I had trouble even getting this game to run right- it seemed like the characters' movements were always too jerky and rapid, their mouths flapping a mile a minute and their eyes rolling wildly around in their heads, and the text boxes with their dialogue would linger a long, long, loooooooong time after the audio had concluded. Messing with the settings and framerate didn't really fix it, so I gave up and decided to go ahead and play the game anyway... and good lord, what a clunky, awkward, obnoxious interface. The walking is keyboard-based and hard to control, it's hard to tell what you can and can't interact with or how to use things together, you have to be EXACTLY lined up with a person or doorway to speak or travel... after I got killed because the damn walking controls wouldn't stop when I told them to, I finally decided it would be more fun to just watch a playthrough on YouTube. And then I found out that the crazy character movements and eternal pauses after each dialogue box weren't because of my system, the game is just badly made. Bad, confusing puzzles, lack of direction or clear goals, awful voice acting (made worse by the long pauses between literally EVER SINGLE line), shallow characters you can hardly interact with, and a plot that was a bit hard to follow even watching someone else play it, that seemingly has every major Lovecraft entity needlessly shoehorned in. The graphics are ok for the era but not very conducive to a Lovecraftian horror theme, the music is repetitive, the ending is cheesy and awful, and the bonus Lovecraft Museum feature is pretty lame and uninteresting. As a huge Lovecraft fan, I was really looking forward to this game, eagerly awaiting its release on GOG for years, but damn, what a disappointment. I hope Prisoner of Ice is better; I haven't tried that one yet. If you're looking for a good Lovecraft game, skip this and get Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (if you can stand the many, many bugs) or Eternal Darkness.

A very good adventure

I discover the game and played in 2020. I really enjoyed the game, as i love read HP Lovecraft's books. A really immersive and fascinating story, good voices acting and very challenging too. I've played it for15 days to watch the end. The game is long but never boring. One of the best adventure game i've played. I trully recommend this masterpiece.

Even for £1.19 on sale this was too much

I can’t believe this was a game put on shelves that passed any kind of quality checks. I like the atmosphere, even the over-the-top voice acting. That’s where the praise ends however. The interface and control scheme are awful, you can easily miss vital things and get your character stuck (both physically and in terms of the story). There is a heavy, actually exclusive, reliance on ‘trigger events’ (where certain things won’t work or appear before a particular unrelated thing has happened elsewhere). You may think you’ve searched somewhere, tried an item, talked to someone… but no, the game wasn’t ready yet. So you’ll spend an hour aimlessly wandering around, thinking you must be stupid, only to resort to a walkthrough and find out some arbitrary thing you need to do before an item magically appears in that box you already looked at. It degenerates into repetitive guess work, and that isn’t my idea of fun. There are a couple of things that I can’t imagine anyone could discover without a walkthrough: -Having to be close to an innocuous background item that the character hasn’t acknowledged at all previously and would have no reason to examine, while holding a certain item that it can combine with…and only after a certain event has happened. -Getting killed in a particular scene, but if you stand slightly to the right your character has the opportunity to escape, absolutely no logical reason why this is the case and no indication that you have to suddenly use the keyboard keys to move your character when you’ve been using the mouse up until then. -You’re told to speak to a guy for help (you spend the first third of the game looking for him), he agrees and you go with him…and die. No explanation at all. But if you don’t go with him, a random unrelated event happens and your character goes off with someone else…neither your character or the player would have any reason to know or do this. Spend your pound/dollar on a chocolate bar, it'll last longer!

Very atmosferic

First things first, do not even try to play the game with the mouse, it's clearly designed to be played with the keyboard and it plays quite well on it. This game has a great atmosphere and is fairly well constructed. Yes, some of the puzzles are a bit out there, but it's only a minor dent on the overall experience. What I especially liked was how I could use the things I've learned in earlier parts of the adventure later in the game. I really felt like I was getting to know the town and the people in the short stay there.
