Description

Call of Cthulhu, the official videogame inspired by Chaosium's classic pen and paper RPG, brings you deep into a world of creeping madness and shrouded Old Gods within Lovecraft's iconic universe.

1924. Private Investigator Pierce is sent to look into the tragic death of the Hawkins family on the isolated Darkwater Island. Soon enough, Pierce is pulled into a terrifying world of conspiracies, cultists, and cosmic horrors.

Nothing is as it seems. Sanity is an irregular bedfellow, all too often replaced by whisperings in the dark. Strange creatures, weird science, and sinister cults dominate the Cthulhu Mythos, intent on realizing their mad schemes to bring about the end of everything.

Your mind will suffer - between sanity and psychosis, your senses will be disrupted until you question the reality of everything around you. Trust no one. Slinking shadows hide lurking figures… and all the while, the Great Dreamer prepares for his awakening.

This is a terrible, terrible game

This is a terrible game that does not deserve the title "official videogame". I lost a lot of respect for Sandy Petersen and Chaosium. It starts off well enough with a very Call-of-Cthulhu-esque "haunted house" sequence, that I loved. But it breaks down after that, and not in good ways. There is very little rhyme or reason to the sequences. One moment, the game is a detective game, the next a zombie shooter. In another sequence it's a puzzle platformer. The "RPG elements", i.e. the skill system, is tacked on and pointless. The graphics are mediocre, and the voice over is bad. The dialogue suffers from being written by someone who took English in high-school and thought an editor - or indeed, basic proof-reading - was a waste of time. I could forgive all that, but where the game really fails is where it counts: The Cthulhu Mythos. The writers obviously knew next to nothing about Cthulhu. For example, the "Mythos" is presented as a unified organization or force, which is just nonsense. If you want a third-rate horror game, buy this at a deep discount. If you are even somewhat knowledgeable about Lovecrafts works, or even a paper and pencil Call of Cthulhu player, avoid this completely. Some day someone will publish a decent Call of Cthulhu game. But this is not it.

Typical Cyanide Game

The games have the same merits and flaws that other Cyanide games I played, which means good background and story but with a gameplay which does everything it can to spoil your experience. So in this game, how does the gameplay spoils everything? Well, the game is mainly an exploration game, but with an autosave system and cutscenes which will effectively stop yout exploration then autosave you to prevent you from being able to come back before the cutscene. Combine that with the scarcity of occult items and now my full occult run is ruined and I have to choose between continue to play the game with a gimped character (as I sacrificed everything to a goal now impossible to attain) or to run another entirely new game which means hours of play lost.

Unfortunate let-down

This game had a lot of potential, being based on a well-established table-top franchise. What you get though, is essentially an atmospheric walking simulator with some stealth elements mixed in. It has a disjointed quality to it, as if the authors wanted to throw in as many Lovecraft references as they could, nevermind its effect on the plot. Ultimately, if you want to experience a bit of existential horror, there are better and less expensive titles on GOG that you can check out.

Broken gog-galaxy

Gog-galaxy installs this game in the same folder as Call Of Cthulhu 2006. As a result you will get non-working Call Of Cthulhu 2006 and Call Of Cthulhu 2018 :)

I wanted to love this game so much...

It breaks my heart to review this game so badly, but i cannot recommend this to anyone, even at a discount (unless it eventually gets crazy cheap). As the story progresses, you feel like you´re watching it unfold more than participating in it, and in some games, that works well because the story captures you in such a way that it doesn't matter. Unfortunatelly, this game is the equivalent of using street view on Google Maps, but the streets are a shady Lovecraftian town... And that's it, that's all it's got for you. Some prompts pop up eerly informing you that what you just did will "affect your destiny", but there's like 4 endings. It feels so underwhelming, despite having some great visuals and some good ideas. There's this section where you solve a puzzle inside this weird dream state and they use some perspective tricks that you have to figure out and it looks so good and abstract, really made me feel like i was in an alien lovecraftian world of deep greens and slimy floors. But that's the thing: there was ONE part like that, ONE puzzle. The rest of the game consists of rubbing your mouse against everything until you find the object that progresses the plot. The characters talk to eachother like they're close and personally invested in one another, but it falls completly flat because you don't feel like that, you meet these people and then spend so little time with them that you any impact of something happening to them is lost. The RPG elemnets are also so unecessary and basically only open a few dialog options. Do not buy this game expecting something memorable or thrilling, I love Lovecraft, his mythos, and i enjoyed somewhat the Bethesda CoC game. I liked this game's visuals and some aspects of the sound design, unfortunatelly, that's not nearly enough for a recommendation.
