Breath of Fire IV

I'm not too far into the game yet, but it's been fun so far. The characters are charming and the gameplay's pretty fun. Twenty-five years old and this game has aged pretty gracefully. But there is one fault with the game, namely that the music and sound effects don't loop properly. To my knowledge this is because the sound files are coded/stored in a format that can't loop the way the game would require them to. Music will abruptly cut off and start over from the beginning, and sound effects meant to be played repeatedly sound choppy. It's a very minor issue, but a little jarring when you notice it happening. I can't imagine the effort required to fix the issue, so I wouldn't be surprised if it can't actually be fixed.

If you love games with strong, meaningful stories, memorable characters you actually care about, and a real sense of style, Breath of Fire IV is something special. It’s not just a good RPG — it’s one of those adventures that sticks with you long after you finish it. The story takes its time in the best way, letting you really get to know the world and the people in it. You’re not just watching the characters grow — you feel it with them. The art style is gorgeous even today, with hand-drawn backgrounds and expressive sprites that give the whole game a warm, almost timeless feel. The music is subtle but powerful, setting the perfect mood whether you’re exploring a quiet town or facing something much bigger than yourself. And the way the game lets you step into the villain’s shoes from time to time adds a surprising layer of depth you don’t see often, even now. Breath of Fire IV isn’t loud or flashy. It’s thoughtful, emotional, and quietly epic — the kind of game that doesn’t just tell you a story, it invites you to live inside it for a while. It absolutely still holds up today, and honestly, it’s even better if you take your time with it.

One of the most beautiful games ever made. Beautiful music, fast-paced battle system and a great cast with unique designs. Every RPG fan should play this classic. Thank you so much for bringing it to a modern audience.

Got it as soon as I found out. It doesn't seem to have the many bells and whistles that emulation has brought to this fantastic work of art, but I'm buying it anyway because I believe in supporting developers and publishers that take preservation seriously. Great job, Capcom and GOG! Regarding the game itself, it's a masterpiece. It's inventive, unique, melancholic, and its themes of the nature of humanity will leave you thinking about it for years to come. The only downside for me is that the ending doesn't resolve a few loose ends fso it'll leave you a little wanting, but overall this is one of the best RPGs ever. You won't regret playing it.

It's been 22 years since the abysmal PC release. GOG has gone back and redone this PC port to better suit modern hardware. They have fixed audio and visual cues and introduced support for modern controls. GOG has breathed new life into Breath of Fire. There is much to be desired, but it's nice to be able to finally return to the cult classic. You won't be getting button prompts to suit your controller choice but it's still very much playable. I would highly recommend playing this if you're a classic jrpg fan.
