Description

In a far-away world, two continents float, separated by a vast swamp-land. For eons, no contact existed between the two continents because ships couldn’t sail across the expanse. At last, when the historic first contact was made between the two powers, war erupted!

After long and costly fighting between the Fou Empire in the west and an alliance of countries in the east, both sides exhausted all their strength and resources. With no other alternative, the two powers agreed to an armistice.

One year later, Princess Elina vanished. She had been traveling in the east from town to town, exploring battlegrounds and visiting war veterans. Her trail vanished in a small town near the front line. Nobody knew her whereabouts!

The Eastern Alliance wanted to avoid sending a large army to the front. Such a move would be a political blunder, breaking the armistice and stirring up hostilities. It became impossible to carry out a large-scale search for Elina. Time passed... with no sign of the princess.

Elina’s sister, Princess Nina, finally makes up her mind. She leaves on a journey in search of her sister – by herself.

Ryu
Ryu meets Nina while he is lying unconscious on a street in a desert town in the eastern continent. His race and native land are unknown. Ryu has a Dragon’s Eye, which empowers him with the amazing abilities to transform into a dragon and summon dragons.
Nina
The princess of Wyndia, a town of the Fae tribe (winged folk). Nina meets Ryu on her journey to seek her lost sister Elina. Though somewhat naïve, Nina is skilled in Healing magic.
Scias
A mercenary soldier, Scias was hired by the eastern side during the war. Scias becomes the party’s watcher. He is very quiet and aloof from the world. Scias can perform a powerful double attack with his sword.
Cray
A young leader of the Woren tribe (cat people) in the eastern alliance, Cray joins Nina to search for Princess Elina, his childhood friend. He has a strong sense of responsibility and acts as the leader of the party. His high offensive and defensive abilities are very dependable.
Ershin
Ershin wears completely sealed armor to protect her from any kind of curse. Since she wears the armor all the time, no one knows her real face or background. She meets the party in a mysterious place polluted by a curse and decides to join them.
Ursula
Ursula is a middle-class leader of the Fou Empire. She came to the eastern continent in search of dragons, and meets up with Ryu and his companions. Ursula was brought up in the military, and knows very little about worldly concerns. She is excellent at attacking with both magic and weapons.
Fou-Lu
Fou-lu unified the western continent single-handedly with his paranormal powers. He became the first emperor of the Fou Empire several hundred years ago. Despite his youthful look, he has mystic dignity. It is said that he predicted his own resurrection as he passed away.

Dragons Stirring

The second best game in the series. While it can't reach up to 3 this is still a very good game with some of the best sprite works ever. It's a dream come true to see a life sign of this franchise and I appreciate this a lot! BoF 4 is a good old school Jrpg, strong cast, interesting story and so on definitely recommended! So far this port runs smoothly, the only major complaint I have is the ugly blur with the pixelart. There are ways around it but a toggle would be wonderful! And that the controller buttons don't show in the game.

Great PS1 RPG

It's just a straight port as expected, but it is an excellent game that still holds up

A classic full of memories, but flawed

My connection with Breath of Fire IV goes back to 2003, when I was 12 and had just moved to São Paulo. Games helped me fit in, and finding BoF4 in a local shop changed my life — it even helped me buy my first PS1 through selling game copies. Now, onto the review: playing it again today fills me with nostalgia, but this PC port has many rough edges. The visuals look strange: floor textures are poorly connected, characters have a heavy black outline, and the overall blending feels off compared to the PS1. Even when using a controller, the game shows only PC key prompts, making navigation confusing. Worse, if your controller disconnects, you must restart the game for it to work again. The camera system is awkward: instead of using the analog stick to rotate, you have to press L2 and R2. Navigation is painful — you often don't know where you are or where to go, and early progression can be blocked unless you pay a high price for hints. Also, this version is censored: certain scenes involving alcohol, mild nudity, and violence were removed. Still, BoF4 remains a beautiful, unique RPG with deep storytelling, fantastic music, and an iconic atmosphere. For the low price, it’s a great piece of history — but buyers should be aware this is more a nostalgic experience than a polished port.

great port

Ownership. accessibility , and preservation are more important now than ever. BOF4 is a great port of the og pc version and fixes some bugs that it use to have. If you want to own your digital game and not pay 50-100 dollars on a used copy, get this version.

Great game but terrible port

This is one of best jrpgs I've ever played. The story is amazing and original, the main villain is one of the best ever portrayed and well written, the battles are cool and engaging. This port on the other side is a terrible mess! Don't be fooled by the "Full support for modern controllers" and "Stunning New and Improved Graphics" descriptions as the controller support is terrible and will get different errors depending or your system (just look at the many complaints shared on the reviews) - in my case I couldn't map the Confirm button and also somehow I keep entering the initial area again on the worldmap (even when I don't press anything) The graphics are the same as in the ps1 version, the only thing they did was upscale to modern resolutions and even that is messed because the characters and textures are blurried and sometimes it feels like the game is stutering. Besides, there is no added quality of life options such as fast forward battles (something I personally think that would be very welcome in this remaster) I always wait for a sale and some initial patches to buy any game, even those that aren't too expensive. When I heard about this, however, I got it right away. I know its a great thing to have these games getting the attention they deserve but its also important they get the proper treatment and polishment. It makes me sad to say this, but unless they fix it, avoid it and get the console version instead.
