This is an excellent strategy game. Yes, it's relatively short, but it has a hard mode so you can go back and play through it a second time for a bit more of a challenge. Plus, it's not possible to get every talent in the talent tree in one run-through (even uncovering them all is nontrivial), so it's fun to go back and see what they all do.
The bottom line is that the game is a lot of fun; the strategy is compelling without being tedious. My only minor complaint is that the tutorials could have explained things that I had to puzzle through myself, such as that a unit's damage is their base damage times the number of units. But that's a small nitpick. Overall I found it to be a lot of fun, and I hope they continue the series in the future.
Much like the first game, pretty simple tactical combat that serves as a quick game to throw a few minutes into or to blast through between longer games. Stacks of units will use either melee or ranged, along with physical or magical damage against enemy stacks. Add some special abilities, some gear with global effects, talent trees and spells and that's pretty much the game. Game uses many of the first games enemies and adds a bunch more; there is variety but, the game still remains largely one of positioning and target priority. The spells do allow for some more combo potential as you bring down a targets armor before hitting it with physical damage, for example.
Map is very linear path, with 2-step branches off it along the way, at the first node combat, at the second node, an item or place to recruit new armies. There are some split decision points, allowing for some re-playability, and some dungeons that spawn new encounters a limited number of times between other combats. Later in the game you'll need to do significant backtracking to fill out your armies, though it wont take too long to perform.
Story is throwaway, dialogue goes mostly for laughs.
Overall its the first game with more content and some tweaks and improvements. It's simple, can be finished in 4-6 hours, but enjoyable for what it is and it's good to see the developers improving upon the original and adding some wrinkles to the formula.
I remove one star for not having much of replayability.
Technically there are a couple of different paths you can follow, but the difference is minimal.
I completed this second game in the trilogy (and last game of the trilogy I played) just yesterday for my Twitch channel. It was a fun ride, as were the other two games. Perhaps the easiest of the three, or perhaps I have just become better by now.
Either way, it was worth it. It took me a bit less than 7 hours total to finish it.
The game is a linear strategy game, think of the battles in the HOMM series or King's Bounty, with smaller amount of battles and only one expansive map, of various different zones.
The world map has you following paths to events or stores or battles, similar to a board game. You can go back to any previously point, but to proceed forward you need to explore/fight your way through.
The battles have you choose your army of 5 different types of units, for the battles. Each type has certain leadership/star requirement, so very powerful unit has 5 stars, least powerful has 1 star, and you can only have up to 15 stars or so. This makes it so that you don't end up with an unbeatable army.
Each unit has health and number of individuals in it. Different attacks, stats, etc. There is also a magic tree you can expand each time you level up, to a maximum of 10 levels. You unlock magic/abilities that you can use during a battle.
The game is 99% about battles, and that is fine. The battles can be anything from very easy to hard, depending on how you deal with them. Also there are 2-3 events you can revisit for more random battles to gain experience and power, to make other battles easier.
The game is really well made, with only a couple of music pieces, but very good ones at that.
The gfx style is similar to the other 2 games, with a cute but not baby like style. I like it.
If you like turn based strategy games and want something easier, go for it!
The other 2 too.
Fun to play for a quick game, with a single battle lasting a few minuts The atmosphere of the game is very good and suits the gameplay. Play it if you just want to turn the brain off for a few minutes, but dont expect the game to reveal a story that would render Shakespeare unemployed :-)
