Description

A promise made and a deal struck, your soul signed as collateral in your debt to the God of Death. Now your benefactor seeks to claim his due and sends his messenger to make sure you make good on your word...

Blood West: Dead Man’s Promise offers you a new story chapter of immersive stealth FPS action. The course of which will take you to a familiar place at an unfamiliar time. As Twen’s father, you will have to pay your debt to the God of Death and wrangle lost souls for his herald. Be prepared for another Weird West adventure with new eldritch horrors and new weapons to send them back to where they came from.

As The Shaman you will have a brand new set of skills, weapons and tools at your disposal. Equip magical staves to melt your enemies’ faces. Summon minions to do your bidding and curse your foes with negative statues. And if that ain’t your style? You can always put them in the ground with a new collection of GUNS.

Abominations yet unseen are crawling out the woodwork, these eldritch predators crave not only flesh of their victims, but also their souls. You will have to contend with creatures that can invade your mind, capable of ending your life in the most creative and gruesome ways.

There is no rest for the reaper and as a herald of the god of death you will have your schedule filled to the brim! However, should you find time to take a break from soul hunting, you will find that even in the end times there are people in need of a hand. But remember that not all stories have a happy ending.

Redefine your playstyle in new ways with a brand new skill tree. In need of company? Invest in the puppet master perk and summon all manner of hauntingly interesting “friends”. Finding yourself short on healing supplies and feeling peckish? Invest points in the adventurous eater perk and turn every unwanted trophy into a hearty, albeit a bit disgusting snack.

Okay, BUT...

Alright, you really need to know what you are buying: 1. TOTALLY WALLED OFF from original game. Original game was released in 3 chapters, this is basically Chapter 4, but a different character. What you do in the original 3 chapters and this DLC chapter DO NOT MIX, so no weapons from this in the original game, no weapons from there here, etc. They originally said there WOULD be, which is one reason I say this. I thought they were going to bring magic and summoning into the original game, but they didn't. NOT HAPPY. 2. If you loved the swamp in the main game, you will love this. If you hated the swamp, you will hate this. 3. Extremely short if you can wade into a crowd and live in the original game and avoid a key hunt. Think 3-5 hours plus another afternoon of frustration. You could probably speedrun this in 20-30 minutes. I can kill up to a mob of 6-7 enemies bearing down on me with buffs, luck, and deep magazines. This also doesn't have strong enemies like the Hellbears, Deathstalkers, or crazy Eldritch enemies needing silver/gold/incendiary ammo from the original game, so you ARE dealing with basic mobs. Moreover, once you get the Voodoo Doll, you have unlimited ammo and can kill ANYTHING in 1 to 2 shots (even body shots) until the final boss except for a single, slow-firing enemy type (and there are like 6 in the whole game). 4. New enemies and weapons are good overall, and magic/summoning is AWESOME. But this actually works AGAINST the DLC, as now you will feel the main game is lacking in the weapons department... 5. ...but the level sucks in the DLC compared to the original game. I'm sorry, but a shortER and MORE condensed level in an already short game is NOT a feature, and it shows - horribly. Area is expanded with swampwater, featureless mine passages, and nothing else. Empty and boring. Feels like 1/3 to 1/5 the actual enjoyable size of original chapter maps. Summary: not recommended except for the weapons. Then you feel sad.

Good but too short

Just when I felt like I got the hang of it again and started to enjoy myself it was over. It took me 5 hours to complete. I think it was a good thing that it does not integrate into the main story because the first quarter of the DLC where you start with bad equipment and struggle to survive is the better part of the experience. Figuring out the new enemies was enjoyable. It felt like the new world itself did not add anything interesting that was not already in the base game. Swamps, mines, and huts.

Worthy spinoff

So basically, it's an abridged version of the Swamp level, but as a Voodoo sorcerer instead of a cowboy. The new magic theme and items are clearly the focus and make for an interesting alternate take on the universe. That alone is enough to carry it and make it worth playing, but don't expect much in the way of level design. And although there are a lot of new monsters, they didn't really feel all that different except for the new "birds" that nest in the trees above, those are a cool and creepy addition. It's a bit disarming at first (literally and figuratively) to learn that you're basically starting from scratch and won't be able to depend on any of the advantages you've earned in the main game. If you had trouble starting out, get ready to have trouble again, but make the most of it and it can be a refreshing return to form. There were so many things I'd taken for granted by the end of the first game and it was kind of nice to have to be more strategic again and use items to my advantage. For example, I had completely forgotten that you can throw stones to distract enemies. It's one of the first things they teach you and yet it becomes so redundant as you get more powerful, but now I found myself depending on it again to land my sneak attacks without getting ganked. By the end however, you'll be a badass Bokor chasing house-sized demons around foreign planes, daring them to try and keep you from taking their soul. I really loved the new items and abilities and had a great time, albeit short.

Great DLC!

A little short, but I liked it alot. It's basically a standalone chapter, so you get to experience someone with a different kit. And way better as a character.

Great DLC and worth the pick-up.

It's a great DLC for an amazing game. The DLC leans much MUCH more into the voodoo side of what makes the undead in this world. While comparatively brief to a main campaign chapter, the developers recently compensated for this by permanently decreasing the price. It's still a lot of fun, expands on the lore drastically, and gives you another perspective on this games version of the "weird west" supernatural world horror vibe. Now they just need to give us a NG+ option to play the witch doctor through the main game's campaign. It'd just be the perfect polishing point to tack onto the DLC, and the only thing that leaves it a 4 star review instead of a 5. If they ever add the feature, then consider this a 5 star review.
