Accentuated with cinema-quality voice-overs, dynamic lighting effects and more than 25 minutes of stunning full-motion-video footage, Legacy of Kain features an engrossing storyline that invites gamers to embark on a journey through an expansive world containing more than 100 hours of intense, blood-sucking, spell-casting gameplay.
The nobleman Kain has been slain by a group of bandits and in his death, he is revived by the necromancer Mortanius for his own ends. Kain is returned in the form of a vampire and yearns to exact vengeance on those who killed him. Stronger and faster than a human being, coupled with a thirst for blood that must be satisfied regularly, he is able to dispatch his killers quickly. However, Mortanius and other forces seek to use him as a tool in a greater plot. Mortanius is of the Circle of Nine, the guardians of the Pillars of Nosgoth. These pillars, connected to the world and balancing the forces, have become corrupted and the Circle members been driven mad. At the Pillars, Kain meets Ariel - a former guardian of the Pillar of Balance, now a spirit after being murdered by an unseen assailant. She informs Kain of his relation to the Pillars and that the only way for him to restore the balance is to seek out each guardian and kill them. The fate of Nosgoth may hang on Kain decisions.
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain is an action game where the player controls the vampiric Kain. As a vampire, Kain is able to withstand sunlight, but is harmed by water. However, he is able to obtain several cursed abilities and spells such as being able to transform into a bat, wolf, and even a cloud mist respectively, as well as learning the ability to disguise himself from creatures of weaker mind. Kain is also fixated on murder and is a master of several ways to kill and destroy his opponents. As the enemies are slain in front of him, Kain may drink their blood to restore his health, which is always trickling away, representative of his insatiable craving. To aid in the slaughter of his enemies, Kain may equip different weapons and armor, each with its own unique properties.

A good port of a Good Old Game
Others have gone over the merits of Blood Omen in greater detail and with greater effectiveness than I could, so I'm simply going to note one important aspect of this port: It is, indeed, a good port. The game runs at a high resolution, accepts inputs from modern gamepads without a hitch, and plays smoothly on modern hardware. There are only two hiccups: 1. The FMVs are a bit low-res and grainy, although I expect fans will mod this problem away in relatively short order. 2. The game plays a bit slower than it should. Not in the sense of having slowdown, but in the sense of just being set to a lower speed. I suspect it may be based on a PAL version of the PC game, and if so, I kind of hope they correct that in an update. Apart from that, though, this is a perfectly good way to experience Blood Omen. I originally bought this more so that I could just own a legal copy of the PC version and continue to use my fan-modded KainGL version without guilt. But I think I may make this my version of choice if the speed issue can be fixed. It's a port of the sort of quality that I didn't expect to see for this obscure forgotten gem. Good work, GOG, and/or whoever else worked on this version.

Huzzah!
Always wanted to play this one, but couldn't get it to work on an emulator. Super glad it's available here without a hitch. It's not a great game by any stretch, but it's a bit of a ''must see / play'' just for the flavor of it. Instabuy when I saw it in the email!

Nearly weeping
For decades the only way to play this game was with unofficial mods for PC or suffer through dreadful load-times on the PS1 or via PS1 emulation. This is finally the game of my childhood!

For me, masterpiece from a classic era
I first played this game on PS1, and 20+ years later, I still get the itch to play it. The intro is something that has stuck with me for all that time. The tone, emotion and language used sticks with me like no other game since, really listen to Kain recalling the deal and the emotions running through it. Listening to it on a dark night, I still get chills when I cozy up to play it like it's early 2000 again with soda, a beanbag chair, a bag of chips and twizzlers.
