Great Fun but Single player is lacking

I will preface this review with the statement that while I recommend Blood Bowl, I can honestly say it is not for everyone. Blood Bowl is not a sports game in the traditional sense, but is a Turn Based Tactics game using sport as a skin to help define play. This means that there is a lot of moving parts to every turn and until you play enough to learn them, you will suck at this game. Positioning, Risk Management, stress management and luck all play a large part of what makes Blood Bowl Blood Bowl. This comes to the forefront with Blood Bowls signature mechanic the Turn Over. Whenever something goes wrong, a Turn Over kicks in and your turn ends immediately, regardless if you have more players you want to use. Thus this makes almost every action have some weight as at best you will have 1 in 6 chance of it ending your turn! Blood Bowl 2 does have a tutorial mode of sorts with story mode, but you are not let off the leash with the full rules active until about a good 6 or so hours (and matches) in so you may have learned some bad habits and find the game has gotten a lot more frustrating really fast and may not know why. There is also a single player eternal league were you can play against AI teams in random ladders and such, but the AI is mostly garbage. The high point of the game for me is character and team growth. As your players do things of note, like scoring touchdowns and inflicting injuries, they will gain experience and level up. This can be a simple as a new skill learned or as powerful as a stat up. All growth is permanent and its fruits can be used in future multiplayer matches! However all good things in Blood Bowl have a sharp edge, many injuries can cripple if not out right kill your players and these injuries are just as permanent. Some of the best teams in the game are also the most fragile and must run the razors edge lest they be broken beyond repair

Good but worse than the predecessor

Blood Bowl is a great game. Blood Bowl 2 is a good game. BB2 suffers the tragic fate that many second installments of various games have suffered before: A handful of desperately needed improvements in the first installment come at the cost of missing features and functionalities that simply haven't been carried over. Almost all of BB2 improvements happened in the In-Game UI, making the game much more accessible to new players than BB1. Tragically all the main menus have gotten significantly worse, maybe as a compromise for console players. Features that have simply disappeared: - Not all actions can be queued anymore (e.g. Passes) - No fully customizable skill presets (all you get are options for Pass, Dodge, Tackle, Fend, Tentacles and Break Tackle) - AI is (even) worse than in BB1 - Skill names are no longer displayed (everything replaced by Icons) Features that inexplicably are (at the moment of writing) still not implemented: - Customizable hot keys (the ONLY thing that can be changed in the laughable "Game Controls" options menue is a checkbox for "ASUS Aurora support" - yes, thank you for this important feature). - Clean Save/Load feature (all you get is "Save and quit") and multiple save games. - Skip lengthy animations (walking blocking, standing up, etc.) - Skip/accelerate AI turns Small additional annoyance: unless you want your coach to be named "guest" you have to create an online account. As long as BB1 remains the superior game I cannot recommend BB2 to experienced players. New players will prefer BB2 and the majority of the multiplayer community can also be found in BB2.

Faithful, fun adaption but mediocre AI

This is a faithful adaption of the Games Workshop boardgame of the same name, so if you've played and liked that this one is a no-brainer. If you have not, the game is a kind of turn-based American Football with fantasy races, and with something of a focus on violent tackles over the passing game and scoring touchdowns (though there are passing-focused teams that let you play more traditional football-style tactics.) The game is quite reliant on a hefty dose of chance, with failures on various actions (tackling, dodging, passing, picking up the ball) resulting in the end of your turn and potential disaster. The strategy aspect of the game is therefore mainly about minimizing risk. The 'Campaign mode' is really something of an extended tutorial that makes things fairly easy for the player (and keeps the rules simple for the first few matches) but there is an engaging 'league' mode with the normal Blood Bowl rules where you can play in various tournaments and watch your team progress (your players get better as they acquire experience, picking up new skills - but also potentially injuries that limit them.) The main problem with the game is the relatively poor AI, which limits the appeal of single player. The AI calculates odds well enough and the games are as a result fairly tense in a moment-to-moment kind of way but it is poor at overall tactics, struggling to score touchdowns or defend effectively. I never managed to lose a game to it (though I had some close calls when the dice went against me!) One word of warning - after the first few tutorial matches, the turns are timed (ie. you get about 5 minutes to move your 11 players each turn) so this is not a game where you sit back and slowly ponder your strategy.

Outstanding Addition to GOG

If you are a Blood Bowl fan...this is a must buy. 5 stars is easy to give, especially since it is on GOG. Now, if only the the Chaos Edition was here; as BBedit is a great tool.

Fun, but limited singleplayer

The tabletop Blood Bowl is a great game and this version captures much of the feel. If you can find a good league, then multiplayer is great fun. Sadly, the singleplayer is sorely lacking. The first thing you might notice before even starting a match is the lag in the menus. Click on your team - delay - click on a player - delay - click back to the team view - further delay. Each pause is only for a couple of seconds, but the cumulative effect is deeply frustrating. Once in game, the AI is awful. I'm not a skilled player, but I've literally only lost a handful of games, and each of those I can blame on either lack of concentration or a series of bad rolls. The computer doesn't recognise final turns and will sit with the ball in defence and lose the game, rather than attempt a touchdown. Similiarly, I've had half the opposing team chase one catcher, leaving the rest of my team to slowly walk the ball down field unopposed. Blood Bowl is a lot of fun, just be aware of the limits to the singleplayer.
