Masterful Simplicity
This is a great "back to the basics" game with a deep gameplay and a lot of substance. Your character has five basic actions: Move, roll, block, regular attack, charged attacks. The responsiveness of the control is incredibly crisp and the precision is almost that of a refined 2D game. The depth of the game is found adapting to your opponents. There are many different very unique kinds of foes and you need to learn to "read" your enemies to figure out the best way to tackle each. Most foes have a variety of moves that they'll execute in different circumstances and you need to figure out appropriate counter. You really need to combine everything you have in your arsenal, often mixing and matching to tackle various opponents successfully and you will often struggle and die at first until you learn your enemies behaviour and their counters. The game requires good reaction times (especially for blocks) and is not for extremely casual players. The game does allow you to grind experience (and hone your skills) by replaying past levels if you struggle and actually encourages you to do so if you get stuck (when you dies twice in an area, you lose all your xp and items, but not your levels and permanent upgrades). The game is pure battle. You have diverse battle grounds (with sometimes unique terrain mechanics) and different enemies, xp and the occasional item between battle (you have a max of 2 items and lose them when you die so you can't hoard). You gain some hp back between battles and you can stop the game without losing anything between levels (which consist of about 10-12 battles and a boss). I played it with a controller and I highly recommend you do so for an optimal experience. The game lasted about 10-15 hours. Depending on how much you have to grind xp and permanent upgrades, it might be shorter or longer for you. Once you completed the game, you have an arena mode, boss rush mode and additional difficulty. I highly recommend this game.
