Blasphemous grabs your attention right away with its dark, detailed visuals. The atmosphere is heavy, filled with bizarre and religious imagery that gives the game a unique vibe. Combat is straightforward but demands focus, since a single mistake can set you back quite a bit — especially with save points being far apart. The story is cryptic, but players who enjoy exploring will find plenty to uncover. Overall, it’s a striking and challenging game that should really appeal to fans of the genre.
It has some flaws, like uncharacteristically missable things, and some tedious traveling, but it's otherwise competent, and it is a Lovecraft X Catholocism kind of affair, which is almost better than any other attempt at Lovecraft.
I've been playing Metroidvania games since the 90s and Blasphemous is one of the best games I've played.
Awesome art!
Great music!
I love the story!
These aspects are so good and make for the fact that the game is, most of the time, huge fun. It's not easy, but certainly a good challenge, most of the time.
Here's the bad:
There were many times when frustration shot up and I just wanted to rage-quit the game for what I feel was just unfair.
When you have to get up several platforms, get hit, fall down into the next hit, to fall down into the next hit, to fall down into the insta-death spikes. There are platform rooms which are hard enough to beat imho, and adding this to your dumb bad luck is just infuriating.
Other than that, I only have to say I would not have been able to beat the game without checking online guides. Some "quest" leads I simply didn't understand as such, others I forgot between plays - I guess I should have taken notes -, so some kind of journal with reminders or the different dialogues to read through again would have been appreciated.
If these two issues don't bother you, get the game. It's really a great jewel in the dark sea of bad and mediocre games and I can't wait to play the sequel!
Metroidvania meets soulslikes in a cathiolic fever dream, the pixel art is gorgeous with a heallthy dose of body horror, the music is a treat, you can really feel the spanish influence, the combat is fluid, fast paced and punishing (Isidora spanked me so much I fell in love with her), 90% of the boss design is amazing, I only found a few bugs related to movement impairment , but they could resolved by changing screens, and my only true criticism is the fact there are nio manual saves, I missed on the true ending by just killing the next to last boss before getting the final heart of the sword , and that sucks.
