Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold

I played this and doom when i was a kid, looking forward to playing the whole thing in order for the fun! Apogee is always gonna be great.

If you want a frankly merciless Wolf3D styled game that doesn't hold back? Blake Stone is probably the game for you. Frankly, I prefer games that want the player to actually win. So what does this game feature that made it unique? A Sci-Fi pastiche, persistent level states and being something the jock could play instead of System Shock, frankly. Your goal as the titular Mr. Stone is to rescue your mother and your sister who are being held prisoner on board one of the stations where Dr. Goldfire is doing unethical mutation experiments on just about anything he can get his hands on. ...Stretched over 60 levels of nigh identical tilesets of twisty passages. The only saving grace is that they didn't figure out pseudo 3D in this engine.

Solid old school shooter based on the Wolfenstein 3D engine but anything but the same. You have to actually not shoot some people because they can provide ammo and what not. The game has it's own unique mechanics like any shooter today based off the same engine would have so it only feels similar to Wolf3D. Either way if you like classic shooters this one is tough and will have you coming back for more, even when they laser blast a hole through your face.

While it is nearly 20 years behind current games in the graphic department, this game stills rocks. The levels are well done and there are many small details that enhance gameplay, like trying to figure out which technicians are informants and keeping them alive. You can just go running around trigger-happy or you can try to get a perfect score by finding all the secret rooms, collecting all the treasures and, off course, killing all the bad guys.

I haven't heard about this game before. Just compiled bstone (source port) on my linux machine without any problem and tried it with shareware version at first. And I'm immidiatelly buying whole series with rott. BS is great game. And with this amazing source port it's awesome to play. It looks very nice even in these days and I can use classic wasd controls. Only problem is I need more time to play these gems!
