An excellent and entertaining collection of little adventure games by the maker of The Shivah and Primordia. Entertaining characters and great voice acting make this a series worth recommending, with many intentionally (and some unintentionally) funny moments. The individual games are short, but tightly designed. The plot of the series builds and gains in impact over the course of a coherent narrative, so it is best to think of the bundle as one single game split into multiple episodes, which gives it a very satisfying total length. Puzzles and riddles are simple, but typically quite intuitive, with only one or two examples that require stereotypically nonsensical adventure logic.
Definitely highly recommended.
An absolute gem of a game. The games are pretty short - which is why I recommend playing them one after another, and consider them more like chapters of one longer game. As a fan of classics, this one was a perfect gaming experience for me.
Embittered writer, supernatural goings-on and conspiracy thriller titles? Surely just another game that uses an exciting premise and a the occasional cutscene full of shadowy figures to string it's missions/puzzles/maps together.
Except.. this is not that game. There's not a Kane or Majestic-12 in sight. This is a series that focuses on the personal. The tormented ghosts in the description aren't evil spirits that you need to combat, but people in denial that you need to learn about so that you can help them come to terms with their death.
It's a well written series and the emotional stuff is involving rather than tedious. It does suffer from pacing issues, the third and fourth game do feel like they're wandering off the plot instead of advancing it, although the fifth game does a reasonable job of tying their plots back in. That fifth game, The Blackwell Epiphany, isn't part of this bundle as of writing but should be bought as an integral part of the series.
In short, a game that almost everyone will enjoy that's been marketed in entirely the wrong way.
The first part had me within the first 5 minutes, very gripping and suspense-packed!
Great story if you like mysterious ones - its about ghosts stuck between our world and "the eternity".
Can't await the next parts..
4 Stars because of some (little) technical issues. Also the voices accentuation do not always hit the spot.
This bundle contains the first four games of the 'Blackwell' series: 'The Blackwell Legacy', 'Blackwell Unbound', 'Blackwell Convergence' and 'Blackwell Deception'. These are four of the finest point-and-click adventure games that you can play. They feature solid writing by Dave Gilbert, a gripping story arc, captivating soundtracks (especially the jazzy tunes by Thomas Regin), competent voice acting, nostalgic pixel art graphics reminiscent of those in early LucasArts adventure games (with those in 'Blackwell Convergence' particularly outstanding), as well as fun, well-designed (i.e. no moon logic) puzzles.
I am usually not a fan of games and television shows about ghosts and the supernatural (with exception to 'The Ghostbusters'), but Dave Gilbert's writing of the characters and their dialogues really brought earnesty and grounding to the subject matter. The games play like detective mysteries in which you get to unearth the dots through interviews and research, and then join the dots in meaningful ways. The puzzles are not hard, though a few did stump me along the way.
The highlight of this series are the stories, which form an overarching the story arc that are both fascinating and intriguing. It is best that you play these games in order to get the most of the narrative. Each game provides anywhere from 2 to 4 hours of gameplay (depending on your puzzle-solving skills), so you can treat each one as an individual episode. Before long, you'll find ourself hooked.
Considering the 'Blackwell' series was created by an independent developer, it is amazing how professional the final products end up looking. All aspects of the games undoubtedly rival the best of the best point-and-click adventure games of the past and present.
