Maybe I haven´t found the map yet, but I find myself going around in circles til eventually dying. The saving is hard to get used to, i´ve died many times because the game saved when I was 1% of life and a room full of enemies ahead. But even if my health was complete it wouldn´t matter some times since the electric traps 1hit kill you. And they´re realy hard to see because of the art.
I really look forward to completing it, however, I really love metroidvanias. I just hope I can get pass the first stage some of these days.
The gameplay is smooth : you can shoot in the fourth direction, jump and wall jump. You have the choice between 8 veterans, each one with a specific weapons and skill. The fact that you can save when you clear a room is interesting, making the progression more enjoyable.
Various palette colors can be found in the game as collectibles and secrets. The game is beautiful in his style but could have been more readable. It lacks also some explanation in his mechanics, for example i discored after 2 hours that i can teleport back at the base anytime. Sometimes the game rhythm is too slow, and some stage are way too long making the game a little boring. Took me 8 hours to complete.
Overall a good game with excellent music and a story in perfect adequacy with the gameplay, the art and the music. If you like pixels and retro game go for it.
I really wanted to like this game. I love metroidvanias, and the pixel art and ability to switch the palette was a big plus for making me pick this up.
The third star of this review is earned through the pixel art and aesthetic alone.
However, the game often feels like it is deliberately wasting your time. Enemies take just a few too many hits to be worth dealing with.
The game stutters slightly every time you pick up an item.
The map is large, but wholly forgettable, many rooms presenting neither challenge, nor something interesting.
And the wall-jump functionality in this game may have caused me more deaths than the enemies did.
The progression is pretty much exploring all rooms, hoping to find a container to have more currency. Find the correct merchant to get the progression item, repeat.
There are some sequences which try to break things up, but even they end up feeling plodding and out staying their welcome before they're done.
Put together, it makes for something that looks like it should be awesome that just feels somewhere between "Bad" and "Meh", which is a real shame.
For a positive experience, going to arcade mode and taking the speed run option gives you a much better experience, as you mostly want to ignore enemies, don't need to explore and there are no bullet sponge bosses.
So yeah, the game boiled down to a <10 minute experience is much more satisfying than the 4-ish hour slog I played first.
I am absolutely in LOVE with this game. What's amazing is that the game is made by a one-man studio, Small Bros. Just wow! While playing, I can see how much work and heart is put into this project.
1. GAMPLAY.
Let me start with the most important - gameplay: it's very good. The cool thing is that the game can be played with different characters that can be changed in the base. Each character is played a bit differently, each has different weapons and specials.
The design of the levels is very interesting, I like that everything is connected,
From time to time, I could control a giant robot mech or a submarine. A great idea!
And finally, there are epic boss fights!
2. GRAPHICS. It refers to the classic Game-boy and comes in 4 colors. Nostalgia pour out of the screen :) Ah and there's one cool thing: there are different color palettes in the game. New palettes can be acquired during the game.
3. MUSIC. Let me just say this: the music is phenomenal. Wonderful Scifi atmosphere :)
4. THE STORY. The heroes of the game are real tough guys with huge guns. But they can handle more than just weapons. Hey they have really cool dialogues! :) I have a feeling that this is a bit like the movies from the 80's. Something like Team A in space :)
5. Finally, let me just say that I highly recommend this game. I love its wonderful atmosphere, 4 color graphics, music, gamplay and story.
