Overview
The original design of the never-before seen point and click adventure is being brought to life after 30 years in the vault - Beyond Shadowgate! This new PC game is being created by the designers of the original 8-bit hit Shadowgate and a leading 8-bit adventure studio!
With a world that is over five times larger than Shadowgate, Beyond Shadowgate captures the same look and feel as the 8-bit console version while including modern design sensibilities. Since the memory and color palette limitations are removed, Beyond Shadowgate is a much longer and vibrant game, with both retro and modern gameplay mechanics that give you the feel of the original! For players accustomed to the NES 8-bit version, the game features XInput controller support. The adventure is also completely playable by mouse and key binds.
Get ready for the ultimate, official Shadowgate sequel!
Story
35 years have passed since Jair defeated the Warlock Lord in the caverns beneath the living castle, Shadowgate. In that time, the land of Kal Torlin prospered and the events of Shadowgate were forgotten. But once again evil is stirring, scheming to bring the world to ruin.
In the dungeons of Gwynenthell, the capital city of Kal Torlin, a lowly Fenling by the name of Del Thornburrow awaits his fate. No stranger to a jail cell, Del soon frees himself from the dangers of the dungeon, only to begin a journey that will push him to the edge of his limits.
Lead Del as he travels through Gwynenthell, across the Torlin Forest, over the Gatekeeper Mountains, and beyond! Uncover plots to overthrow kingdoms that threaten to plunge the land into darkness! Interact with old friends and new, while protecting Del from the traps, hazards, monsters, and every other peril that may introduce him to the ever-present Grim Reaper.

I used to play the original Shadowgate inside and out on my nes. I played the board game and even helped tryed to fund that in Kickstart as well. I am glad when I had the option to back this up on Kickstart I was not disapointed in the end result. Save often and always remember you never learn if you don't try something dumb even if you die.
The developers really created a labor of love with this one. I've only been playing this for about 8 hours so far, but I am VERY impressed!
If you liked the original Shadowgate on the NES, you will LOVE this one!!
I don't know what more can be said that the store page hasn't covered, but this game is truly a welcomed step back into classic text-based gaming.
Though the original Shadowgate was on ancient Macintosh systems, Beyond Shadowgate is a direct sequel (35 years later to be exact) to the classic 8-bit NES port with the same type of interface and graphical fidelity, though just a tad more colorful and animated.
The music and effects are directly reminiscent of the NES chip tunes and will bring you back to your childhood in no time. As for the controls...I'd have to say that they are far superior the the NES gamepad. Now, the keyboard and mouse along with shortcuts can be used to fully and quickly navigate the game instead of using a controller. On the other hand, modern controllers work just fine as well. Take your pick and play your way. As for settings...there really isn't much to tinker with. You can either use windowed or Fullscreen mode, and you have the ability to turn off timed events (a new addition to Shadowgate). In terms of specs...I do believe a toaster can play it. So, unless you are rocking out DOS, I think you'll be fine.
Other than that, I recommend getting the Special edition as it comes with a fully illustrated strategy guide (use it after you have pulled your hair out...not before), 3 comics (one of which is a strategy guide for the original game), the soundtrack, and a digital game map.
Lastly, go give Shadowgate (2014) a spin too if you haven't already.
I am somewhere in the second Chapter, but i feel comfortable enough to review the Game.
I have the first Shadowgate on the GBC, but never got far into it, because i wasn't in the Mood for Trial and Error.
This Game doesn't punish you for trying out an dieing, it has very fair Checkpoints and you do lose absolutly no Progress.
Until know, if you observe well enough, the Puzzles are very solveable and the Game resembles very much an Click and Point Adventure, as not every Room/Area resembles a Death Pit and you can wander around too search for Items and Clues.
The Music is very Good and do Help the Graphics to construct its Atmosphere.
And i can very recommend to check the small Map on the left Corner, i was stuck because i did oversee a Room :>
I can also recommend to spend the Money on the Special Edition, the Guide is really well and lovely done (only did read it till the sections i am, it contains also History of the Series in the Beginning) and the Comics also give you good Entertainment.
Ah, and i personally like Maps.
