it's a really fun game through and through, thought I'd try it out after hearing of the new one in the works and it plesantly surprised me.
if you can buy it do so without hesitation
Had i been able to give it 4,5 stars that would be my rating.
The game just good fun to play, even in 2024 (my first time playing it). Fun, challenging and engaging gameplay is the games major strength. And you get to care about the characters throughout the story as well.
Sure the game suffers from some issues, where the camera is probably the most annoying (and no controller support for a console game?). But remember this is a game from 2003, you got to expect and accept some of these things.
I had surprisingly much fun playing it and even though i'm not the best at these types of games i made it all the way to the final boss. Ended up without any energy refills, so a quick advice to new players: Have plenty of refills before the last fights.
Seriously, reading all the reviews and listening to people praising the game, I expected something akin to Psychonauts. Misunderstood classic, a game ahead of its time, a rough yet beautiful diamond. And what I got? Meh. Almost everything about this game is mediocre.
Does it look pretty? Sure... But it hardly has any fresh ideas in terms of visuals. We've seen all of it a thousand times before and after. Does it sound good? There is a couple of memorizable songs, and a couple more nice-sounding tracks, but voice acting is lazy, as is cut-scene directing. Characters and story are clichéd and, again, don't have anything truly interesting to offer.
Gameplay has too little variety to it, a good chunk of any level involves just running through straight corridors with nothing else to do. Battle system is essentially nonexistent. To add insult to injury, there is no native controller and widescreen support in a PC version and GOG didn't bother to add them.
Overall, it lives up to its title by being neither a really good game or a really bad game. Play once and forget forever.
This game exemplifies why there are so few unique games, it has been proven time and again that nobody actually buys them unfortunately, who can blame EA for putting out the same old dribble year in year out.
The only thing that keeps this of my best games of all time list is the slightly dodgy camera that often serves to work against you sometimes, I would even go as far as saying some of the obstacles you have to overcome were actually created with this in mind.
Don't let this keep the game from your basket though overall this game is a brilliant experience that no one should miss!
