This will be the third time I'm purchasing this game. Back in the 90's, then once again on eBay which I still have, and now a digital copy via GOG just for the hell of it.
Yes, the graphic is seriously dated, but the gameplay is of master quality. I warn you though, the game is very difficult to modern standards. Others have commented enough so I'll leave it at that, but if you can get past the dated graphics I'm sure it'll open your eyes.
There are a great many good RPGs out there, but in my experience Betrayal At Krondor can't be beaten.
Some say that Planescape Torment or Baldurs Gate are better, but there are certain aspects of this game that make it shine above any I've ever played.
It's an open world - really - you can go anywhere you like.
It has turn-based combat so that you can work out strategies on how to defeat the opponent rather than hack and slash. For those that played games like Shining Force when they were younger or Advance Wars today, you'll know how addictive these battles can then become.
Because of Raymond E. Feist, a great writer, there is such detail in the world, and I don't mean brilliant graphics. In most games, a health potion is just a health potion. However, the weird and wonderful detail to many items in this world which add to the richness of the world come through.
The music is excellent and some of the tunes really stick with you.
It is truely the best RPG of all time.
And its great that its all packaged into a DOSBox for you so that there is no hassles whatsoever.
Go get it!!!!
Great set of games, but, as *many* people have stated, the GOG version of Antara has a bug that makes the game literally unplayable several hours in. Don't waste your money, as GOG has apparently ignored this issue for years.
It's hard to find appropriate words for a game that pulled you in as a kid and kept you there for years and years. I am currently on my 7th playthrough and i am still enjoying exploring every nook and cranny of the fabulous world of Midkemia.
Many reviews here are spreading a common misconception that BaK's story was written by R.E.Feist. The entire story, dialogues and many of the game's characters were designed and written by Neal Hallford. Feist had very little involvement with the game.
If you like this game, you may want to support Mr. Hallford and sign the petition he put online for a sequel:

BETRAYAL AT KRONDOR, based on the fiction of Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar saga was an excellent game when it came out. It was far superior to other RPG's at and around the time it was released (1993). BaK is a story-driven RPG with premade characters (no character creation). The graphics were amazing for 1993, the characters a digitalized photographs, the 3D semi-open world looks pretty darn good (definitely better than ULTIMA UNDERWORLD II or RAVENLOFT). But be prepared to do A LOT of reading - there are no voiced dialogues.
Of course BaK looks very dated nowadays and it will take some getting used to. It has good tactical combat and a very good skill system. It also is quite difficult.
BETRAYAL IN ANTARES however has NOTHING to do with Feist's work. The developer lost the rights to the source material and created a world of their own. Why this is sold as part of the BETRAYAL OF KRONDOR pack instead of its real sequel RETURN TO KRONDOR makes no sense. BiA as I remember it was inferior in every way. Unfortunately it always crashes during cutscenes, so I didn't bother trying to replay it. It came out in 1997 and was badly outdated on a technical level (for some inexplicable reason the two unrelated main characters use the exact same character model with different hair and clothes, very odd). This pseudo-sequel retains the premade characters, the UI, the combat and controls but misses the great story of the original. While the original was pretty impressive graphically when it came out, this one looked atrocious.
Overall I recommend BETRAYAL AT KRONDOR if you are into older RPGs and don't mind reading a lot. If you've read and liked the Riftwar saga (at least the first 3 books) even better.
Don't bother installing BETRAYAL IN ANTARA though, it's just a grifter.
