Interesting And Fim

This game was released during the domination of Lucasart's point-&-click games, and while it wasn't compared favourably with them, it can certainly hold its own with the best. Okay the graphics are clunky, but the backdrops are detailed, the story quirky - going from serious to humourous very easily - and quite possible a cult classic in computer gaming. It's only let down really is the constant need to have some words of the dialouge in capitals even when they aren't being stressed; can can get rather annoying, especially since sometimes the speech is garbled back either background sounds or just plain bad recording at the time. Still, these are flaws that can be over looked and the game enjoyed nevertheless.

Very good adventure game

Well, considering that this game is being offered for free, the only real question to ask yourself is whether it is worth the short download time and small amount of space it will take up on your hard disc. If you don't want to read my review, here's the short answer; yes, it is. What are you waiting for? Download it! I'll keep this review to the point; BASS is a game with a wonderful story, although in my opinion the story could have been fleshed out a bit more. It's set in a city which is hundreds of stories tall, and feels to me sort of like a composite of the Los Angeles in Blade Runner and the city from Brazil. If a cool sci-fi story set in a place like that sounds like your cup of tea, than this game is for you. The graphics hold up fairly well, and if you run it through the included emulator you can tweak the graphics to be a little smoother. The voice acting is all very good, although I have to wonder how a bunch of British people (and one American guy) ended up populating a city in Australia. Of course the most important part of any adventure is the puzzles, and BASS has some really good ones. Most of them are very well thought out, but there are a couple that are nonsensical (and nonsensical puzzles are the bane of many adventure games, imo). One in particular involves launching a small animal into a pool of water with a catapult to destract a guard. What? Still, over all they are very interesting and make sense. Anyway, why are you still reading this? You should be downloaded Beneath a Steel Sky.

Flashback

I just finished Beneath a Steel Sky again. For the first time in - wait for it - 12 YEARS! The game came bundled with the first Sound Blaster 16 cards in the nineties so basically every kid with a 286 was playing it. At the time it was the one of the few quality adventure games that weren't Lucasarts or Sierra and my first introduction to cyberpunk. Set in a Blade Runneresque dystopia you - Robert Foster, and your metal sidekick Joey have to find a way to escape this metropolis prison and certain doom. This is a must play from the golden era of adventure games and it will keep you entertained for hours with a solid story and the all purpose crowbar to go with it.

Beneath a Steel Sky

I finished this adventure for the first time in my life. And I have very mixed feelings about it. +: The story is mostly fine. It does not keep you in suspense, but it's believable and I can empathize with Robert. Game is very humorous with dark notes. Every NPC here is unbelievably good written. -: Game logic is very immersion breaking. There was not a single time I forgot that I'm playing classic "point and click". Here is a motorcycle magazine. Why do I need it? To exchange for a city tour ticket. Why do I need that one? It turns out I can give it to the pipe factory owner. Why? etc... The whole game is like that. Robert is constantly saying that all he wants is to get out of this city. And it seems that he does absolutely nothing to accomplish that. Death mechanics seems to be completely out of place here. Death feals absolutely unearned each time, and only makes a player to constantly save the game when action looks dangerous. This is done much better in Full Throttle, where the game restarts after death at a moment when it's still possible to change something. Death in the metro tunnel is completely ridiculous. Robert either dies - or makes an action that does not make any sense from his point of view. Complete this picture with occasional pixel-hunting. You certainly can have fun playing this game. It's free, it's funny. But find some game guide and keep it open.
