Before Your Eyes is a first person narrative adventure which tells the story of a soul’s journey into the afterlife using a new and innovative form of interaction—your real-life blinks.
The story begins after your death, aboard the ship of a mythical Ferryman tasked with shepherding souls to the afterlife. In order to help you pass on, he must first learn the story of your life. And so, he sends you back to relive your most important moments.
The game uses your webcam to immerse you in this story in a way you've never experienced before. You will learn to control the flow of the narrative with your actual eyes–blinking through precious memories of family, first love, and the rise of an artistic career. But soon the Ferryman will suspect you aren't showing him everything he needs to see. So he will force you deeper into the dark recesses of your most repressed memories, ultimately revealing a heartbreaking truth.
By combining its innovative blink interaction mechanic with a charming world and a fully voice-acted story, Before Your Eyes is a deeply emotional and relatable journey—one about the impossible expectations we place on ourselves and the regrets we carry with us.
An earlier version of the game, titled Close Your, received the Game Developers Choice award at Indiecade and the Student Award at the Independent Game Awards (IGF), before receiving funding through a successful Kickstarter campaign.
CW: Before Your Eyes deals with themes of death, illness and grief
For sure this is one of the best games I have ever played, such a great story with a special dynamic of blinking makes it one of the most interesting and immersive games ever.
I played "Before your eyes" on another platform.
Caveat emptor: The game requires a camera and good lighting, so that it can track your eyes and see when you blink. Playing in the dark room and/or at night might be challenging and isn't recommended. If you either can't or don't want to accommodate these requirements, you may choose to skip this title.
Because, eye-tracking is a key element. Blinking (even by accident) counts as a "click" on whatever the game thinks you are looking at. Leading to a certain desired randomness. The whole point of the game is that you have to try not to blink, unless you intend to. Particularly while sitting through long scenes.
If this does sound like a thrilling idea to you, you absolutely are recommended to try.
If you do give in to the camera/eye-tracking experience, it amounts to a "Gesamtkunstwerk", a piece of art, that is bigger than the sum of its parts.
However, without the camera, even though the game will still start, you are missing a key ingredient. You are left with a narrative driven visual experiment, whose story may fail to bring the experience together all on its own.
The game itself leads you through a number of scenes that are loosely connected moments from the life of the protagonist. Blinking too early may skip the scene you are watching, providing a constant challenge. Mouse control takes that thrill away.
The "story" does touch on some sensitive subject matter and is told exclusively through exposure. However, nothing you do has meaningful impact, there are no choices beyond, well… blinking. This style of storytelling needs to be your cup of tea to work its charm.
This game was incredibly absorbing and emotional as well as concise. It makes great use of the blinking mechanic and I feel it's more than a gimmick and sometjhing that heightens the story.
