The Streamlined Battlezone experience.

This is not the "oh my god everything is going to hell" Battlezone. This is the streamlined experience but it still a very good one. It is also the one I recommend people to try out first if they never tried a Battlezone game. It eases you into the experience of commanding and base-building at the same time. The story is also very interesting, even if it diverts a bit from the Bio Metal War that gave the original one such a charm. New graphical settings are pretty damn good and it is not just nostalgia-tinted googles talking on that account. For the asking price, they could have done a lot worse but instead gave us some good value for our money. Sure, some parts of the game are dated but it is not a whole new game; it is an improvement of an old one. As an improvement, it is a very good one.

Graphics are nice, but same game

This is Battlezone II: Combat Commander with a shiny coat of paint. If you loved the original game, everything is still here - including all the old issues. There's still noticable lag in the campaign for many scripted events, the and scripted AI is still sluggish and stupid. The UI is at a higher scale, but exactly the same otherwise. I wanted more from this. Except for achievements and graphics, I've yet to notice an improvement. In fact, because of the much improved graphics, the things that haven't been improved *really* stand out. - Control sensitivity is still really sluggish and impossible to balance between pilot and craft. - The original cinematics are included, now with a massive border around them to prevent over pixelation. (They weren't that good looking in '99, and they haven't aged well.) - The original VO is still there. Lots of tinny, poorly mixed voices. - Some controls are still hardcoded and undocumented Minor fixes would have gone a long way to make this really really good. A few extra features (UI scaling comes to mind) would push it into 'you need to buy it' territory. Is this the best way to play Battlezone II? Yes. It looks shiny, but it's still the same game from '99 underneath, including all of its worst flaws.

Incomplete remake

Being a Battlezone II fan, I bought Combat Commander instantly when it came out. I should have waited. There are many issues with the game. First of all, this is not a complete remake. They've remastered the graphics and added modern multiplayer support, but almost everything else is identical to how it played back in the old days. Controls are really sluggish even when mouse accel is off. Audio has NOT been remastered. By today's standards, the audio is low quality and that doesn't help immersion. The old voice acting is also not very good for 2018. With all that said, if you love the Battlezone games and want a sort-of remake, then you might consider getting this game. Just know that it is primarily the graphics and effects that are changed. Everything else is pretty much untouched for better or for worse. *Note: You need GoG Galaxy to play this online (if you need an external software to verify and play a game online, then I consider that DRM).*

Classic almost revived.

I lost many an hour playing the original incarnation of this game in my younger years and so i'm thrilled to bits to see a re-release with some graphical improvements etc. The well balanced mix of action and strategy is still as addictive now as it was back then, although many of the games flaws are still present. the Aiming reticule still lags and drifts for example, and while this can be mechanically justified to some degree while piloting the many vehicles, it almost seems to completely ruin the first person mode when on foot; the narrated mission briefings too, are also showing signs of age, sounding far more more tinny and fuzzy than I remember, but I can imagine that many of the people who are familiar with this title might find this to be quite nostalgic.

Mechwarrior/ C&C

People saying it's a bad remake... Erm, I played the original and this, and this isn't a remake as far as I know, it's a remaster... ? Anyway, this game needs a remake, as the basics are flawed. AI pathfinding: messed up. Save your game regularly, it will bug so bad you can't move on (only occasionally). BUT! The experience is still rather good. You can (once you build a radar building... thing...) play it as an RTS by jumping into said building by leaving your tank/mech behind and placing buildings and turrets and directing your units. Or , you can stay in your tank/mech and go in face to face. Both versions are good, but neither is perfect. It's like you can play either version of this game and change back and forth as you please. That is the strength of it for sure. Personally, while I like that you can fly a tank in and even if it blows up you can eject and tell a nearby ally to eject so you can take their tank and keep going. I found it annoying that if I die, end of the game (ie Mechwarrior). Whereas if I stay in the radar centre I can keep directing units assuming that no one wipes out the building I'm standing in. But that's the beauty of the game. While it's flawed. The story is good but poorly executed. Cutscenes are directed by a snail who can't edit to save its life, Blah blah, circa 2000 problems. EITHER WAY YOU PLAY this game is good enough to make most players enjoy I think.
