easy addictive boring tedious quirky game

let me first comment that if you think there are 4-5 missions per game or that 10 blueprints of an alien ship unlocks it in this game, think again. this game is very quirky, so much so that you have to wonder if it is by design or mistake. gameplay is easy to learn. select a command ship. select a play level from easy, normal or hard. select a space geography from random or endless. outfit your ship with the limited bonus points and scrap (credits) initially provided. go to the starmap and jump to a sector to begin combat. the game ai controls where you enter a sector and who you will combat. you have directional control of your ship(s). the ai controls weapons firing. the ai controls when you can leave a sector by opening the starmap to allow jumps. sometimes you can leave mid combat, sometimes you can't. you gain bonus points and scrap by destroying the enemy. scrap is used to buy up to 2 more ships for a fleet and more weapons or shielding. bonus points let you upgrade weapons and shielding. losing your command ship brings permadeath and you have to start over again. you can save and return to the game later with the escape key. most players can win easy and normal games without much trouble, hard games are more difficult because you are given less initial scrap to outfit your command ship with and the last missions of the hard game get tough. the game often gives comments when you enter a sector that take game/display control away from you. when you regain control the display is often not reset to the way it was before the comment. your ship(s) may not even be on the display. in combat this can cost you the game. this game is not very user friendly. if you save and leave the game, useful game info is not provided when you return. games normally have 4-5 missions per game. i have played games with 10 or more missions. why? i don't know. the extra missions seemed tougher than usual, though. you are supposed to unlock alien command ships when you obtain 10 blueprints for a particular ship in combat. i was playing on experience level 57 with 35 total alien ship blueprints when i first managed to unlock one alien command ship. the odd thing was that i didn't have 10 blueprints for that ship! the ship unlocked was the malregorg, which is the first ship in the command ship list after the regular command ships. all in all, an odd game, but i did get my money's worth, so it deserves my 4 stars.

Boring

Plodding, boring. Everything about this game is as "middle of the road" as humanly possible. Combat is so slow paced it's not even remotely interesting to watch or engage in. The only real challenge comes when an enemy lands on top of you that's significantly more powerful. That usually just ends with you dying instantly, but at least it's not "sleep until you win". There is no minimum distance, so this happens frequently. The hazards are just stupid. One negates shields. Okay. One drains hull. Okay. One is asteroids which damage you if you touch them. But you can't move fast enough to avoid them and weapons won't target them so it's really like a shield+hull drain sector. Upgrades don't make weapons more interesting, just more powerful. There's nothing innovative about any of the weapons and many upgrades have "tradeoffs" which are a desperate attempt to shoehorn any kind of variety into the upgrade process. Even the fastest combat speed is plodding and it resets to the slower speed every time you encounter an enemy. Random star system layouts mean sometimes you run into enemies that can kill you before you can warp out before you've gotten any salvage. Other times you get tons of upgrades first. There is absolutely no progression I can see aside from unlocking bigger ships and higher difficulties which is really just "they do more damage". This game is to space strategy sims what La Croix is to soda pop.

Boringvoid, Rocket cannon collecter

With a few good, expansion pack sized tweaks, Battlespace: Wingdinger would've been a solid 20 hour experience. As it stands, even the first runs, where you're still unlocking different ships and playstyles, manage to be boring. Once you get 3 ships with rocket cannons and max burst, you've basically won. But you'll likely achieve this on the 1st of 4 maps. That means 3/4rds of the game is filler. The ship and difficulty progression are likewise murderously slow and tedious. There is basically no avoiding grind in 2018, every game has it. But then I had the most tepid realization of all. Even if everything in Battledroid Carmichael was unlocked to me now, I wouldn't bother to check it out.
