Absolutely awesome game, but when i tried to save it wouldn't let me. I thought i would troubleshoot the situation and realized that there was no "Saved Games" folder in the DL so all I had to do was make a new folder called that and it worked.
Battle Realms is my favourite RTS due to several reasons:
The graphics are well-aged (and with a little bit of nostalgia) still really beautiful, cause the units and the environment are wonderfully designed. Together with the great soundtrack/voice acting and the interesting setting, the game creates a great and uniqui atmo, when you ever wanted to play a hidden gem, thats your game :)
The Campaigns are a good way to learn different game mechanics (and clans) and teach you and how to react in several situations against even larger armies, but they still offer much more. The story itself isnt really special, but very good narrated and all the characters are interesting, even the bad guys ^^. You have to make decisions between the missions how you want to develop the campaign and so 3 the campaigns have a replay value. They overall feel very well-rounded and detailed.
Like mentioned in my heading, the game mechanics are really simple and can be learned withing some hours. You just have a couple of units to control and so the game never gets unclear. The economy is kept very simple and training units is a bit special, but not what defines the game in my eyes, hence also very simple. Of course you can optimize your economy (and later your fight tactics) a lot, but its very easy for beginners to learn and truly understand what happens during the whole game.
The game concentrates on (relatively small) battles. You can specialize your small armies and lay in ambush till the enemy arrives or keep pushing the enemy with brute force and trying to weaken his economy, and so on. The mechanics are all easy to learn, its the right timing and the overview what distinguishes a beginner from an advanced player. The battles are a lot of micro-management when the player reaches a certain level, but need to be well prepared as needs to be the environment where you want to face you opponent. (Forests for ambushes, mountain ranges for defensive positions etc).
No signs left, buy it!
Battle Realms is a game that want to stand on its own legs rather than being a copy-paste title of the genre. I start with this because this single statement is the very core of the game. Why? Instead of spamming the soldiers you have to manage what you get and you can summon a single plus unit above that. Right after placing your building it will produce peasant over time depending on your population slower or faster. Your job is to train them to being able to fulfill different roles, as well upgrade their abilities in combat. While the resource is unlimited, the limit of available peasants enforce thinking over rashing. Be at the right place at the right time with the right units to counter your opponent's move. This includes the terrain based advantages like height, or the different armor and damage types which very much decide a fight's end.
Training the peasants alone is the first thing you can do, but you can train them multiple times to make them more and more universal with better abilities. This is what makes Battle Realm unique, the ability to combine the specializations of the different roles. I said the peasants come over time and that is what you have, but actually there is an exception. Zen Masters, or as the RTS generally calls them, heroes/commanders can be produced at will, but for higher cost than the other units. These special units are much stronger than the normal ones, and comes with already learned abilities. Either as last resorts or frontline attention takers they can change the outcome. It is worth to mention, there is also a monk/ninja depending on the clan you play that also buyable. These units costs Yin-Yang points which is the third resource and only acquirable by fighting which limits their amount on the battlefield.
Despite what the communities say or videos show about the game, this is a generally slow paced RTS with focus on setting up your army rather than spamming what you can the fastest, and I love it exactly because of that.
