Battle Isle Platinum (includes Incubation)

I haven't even tried the other Battle Isle games, I have to admit. Incubation is great and everyone should play it. The only problem is that GOG has been dragging their feet for 9 years now and the version you download from here will likely not work directly on Windows 10/11. You either need to replace a dll file (sound.dll) with one downloaded from the internet (god knows why it is not included with the game at this point), or get the 25th Anniversary Mod. I suggest you get the mod, because it'll allow you to set the graphics to more modern resolutions and they won't be stretched out from 640. On my ultrawide monitor Incubation was pretty horrid with the original aspect ratio, but with the mod it still looks great (albeit somewhat blocky, of couse).

I did not expect it to come, but here it is: the most rewarding turn based strategy game series I know. I really like the near future scenario. It's easy to understand gameplay, and being hard to master at the same time - Battle Isle was an instant classic. And what makes it even better: you not only get the golden classic Battle Isle, it's peaking sequel and the awesome brother in time - no, you also get a turnbased squad strategy game: Incubation. Incubation is the Predator game for all Battle Isle commanders: you are lost, have only primitive weapons and an overwhelmingly strong enemy lurkin' everywhere ... hunt them down! All you do is trying to escape and keep moving as the city you are enclosed in is turning into a slaughter for the aliens. On your way you find supplies like exo skeleton parts to make you men faster , bigger an more sophisticated guns an special application stuff. And if you are really good - I find and get even some lost recruits through the levels. Overheating and jammed guns, low ammunition and nowhere to go - there is plenty room for failing in surviving each level, each combat and each new mutation you encounter... There are also some minor weak moments: bad camera on incubation and annoying time pressing levels. But it is still one of the games which I kept my Win95 system around for - until today!

Simply put, this is one of the best value packs on GOG. Five games and a boatload of expansions offering accessible but challenging strategy gaming, future tanks and giant stompy war-bots. It's just a pity that at the moment, the crowning gem of the pack - Incubation - doesn't work at all on Windows 10. Hopefully there's a fix coming for that soon. In all fairness it was a nightmare getting the game working on any modern OS, but it's still sad to see it broken. Fingers crossed that an update happens soon!

Battle Isle Platinum and all its components add up to create a very unique and fun-to-play game. The problem is that the games' cutscenes glitch repeatedly on my Windows 7 x64 PC with a quad-core i7 processor. This, in and of itself, doesn't totally ruin the games, as they are still playable, but a game loses some of its magic without the addition of a storyline. Interestingly, Battle Isle 1 and 2 run with almost no glitches, likely because of the minimal to non-existent amount of cutscenes. In any case, the games are an enjoyable take on SF strategy and tactics, and if that's all you're looking for, this might be the right buy for you.
