Unforgiving but satisfying strategy.
Battle Brothers puts you at the helm of a mercenary company who have fallen on hard times after the death of the last captain. It's up to you to rebuild and manage a gritty crew of mercs, and hopefully make some money in the process. The setting is a low-magic fantasy medieval world, with the usual appearance of orcs, goblins and undead - but the typical fantasy setting you might come to expect ends there. You are mercenaries - not heroes - and even should you choose to be honorable, most if not all of your men will not see a happy ending in this story. You will frequently be faced with the grim reality that you're replenishing your ranks with desperate men who hardly know which end of a sword to hold, knowing full well that you're sending them into certain death. I don't want to give the impression that the game is unfair though - yes, there is a little bit of a random element, but not so strict as to make things unwinnable merely by chance. Your choice of weapons and the formation of your soldiers is far more of an important element. Every weapon has its place - and the importance of choosing the right equipment and soldiers to match the situation is vitally important. On the down sides, the game can sometimes be a little slow-paced. It also seems ripe for modding, but there is no internal mod support. The developers delivered on all their promised content, but have also discontinued any further development aside from bug fixes. This is not so much of a fault for the game, but it is disappointing. Particularly, after you have some familiarity with the game, you will realize just how much more potential it could have.
