Battle Brothers is a turn based tactical RPG which has you leading a mercenary company in a gritty, low-power, medieval fantasy world. You decide where to go, whom to hire or to fight, what contracts to take and how to train and equip your men in a procedurally generated open world campaign. Do you have what it takes to lead them through bloody battles and to victory?
The game consists of a strategic worldmap and a tactical combat layer. On the worldmap you can freely travel in order to take contracts that earn you good coin, find places worth looting, enemies worth pursuing or towns to resupply and hire men at. This is also where you manage, level up and equip your Battle Brothers. Once you engage a hostile party the game will switch to a tactical map where the actual fighting takes place as detailed turn based combat.
Manage a medieval mercenary company in a procedurally generated open world.
Fight complex turn-based tactical battles with historical equipment and brutal injuries.
Permadeath. All characters that die in combat will stay dead – unless they return as the undead.
All characters come with their own background stories and traits. Want a stuttering ratcatcher, a greedy witch hunter or a drunkard disowned noble?
Character development without a restrictive class-system. Each character gains experience through combat, can level up and acquire powerful perks.
Equipment that matters. Different weapons grant unique skills – split shields with axes, stun enemies with maces, form a spearwall with spears or crush armor with a warhammer.
Diverse enemy roster. All enemies have unique equipment, skills and AI behavior.
A dynamic event system with atmospheric encounters and tough decisions outside of combat.
Three late game crises – a war between noble houses, a greenskin invasion and an undead scourge – add a looming threat.
Two full hours of orchestral soundtrack.
Overhype Studios is an independent game developer studio from Hamburg, Germany. We are devoted to making great games that we want to play ourselves. With Battle Brothers we thrive to reflect the creativity, complexity and originality from the old days when game developers where passionate gamers, not corporate businessmen. While doing this we took a lot of inspiration from some of best games out there: The original X-Com, Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat, Mount & Blade and Jagged Alliance.

I have it on Steam, played it 300h+.
The good:
Fantastic tactical combat system. Abilities of your bros and types of weapon provide different types of attacks and manoeuvre. It provides a lot of options. You can push, pull, attack in different patters, etc.. Good movement system, fatigue and initiative nicely combined. It adds up to great diversity with a relatively simple system.
Variety of enemies. Different human types, unlike some suggested use the same rules as player. The "monsters" have their own set of rules and some act very differently. Fights with various enemies feel different, require different approaches.
This is controversial. Setting is low magic sword and sorcery -like. Company is human and fights only for profit. Many fantastic creatures but magic is very rare. I enjoy it but some people might find it off putting.
Game lacks main narrative but has small stories, funny or interesting encounters. Not a lot of writing but of good quality.
Game has hardcore mode. It works well but you should not start with it. The player needs to know from which enemies to flee (is easy BEFORE engaging). Faster to learn with saves.
The bad:
Tactical combat part is amazing but everything else is worse. Not terrible but not great either.
World is pretty generic except for the low magic - which is rarely done in games.
World is mostly static, it waits for your company to show up. The contracts appear and disappear but no one else takes them. The big "crisis" happen 100% randomly. And so on...
Levelling system is well balanced but a bit boring.
Amount of builds is limited.
Some enemies are dull and don't add much to the game
Random terrain in battle gives good variety but combat is always outside. I'd love to see fights inside buildings, perhaps some dungeon crawling too.
Tactical combat is among the best there is. This game is about tactical combat. I like it. Don't listen about the RNG, it's nothing special.
Overall: 9/10, rounding up to 5/5.
At first glance I thought I had installed some sort of retro Wii type game... Characters are moved like chess pieces and battle has very little graphical special effects... and people turn out to be very delicate, fragile things when metal objects are driven into them. Mortality is high when you manage your troops poorly and when they are ill equipped and inexperienced. If you want to start a game with 12 characters and end up with the same 12 characters all polished and levelled this is not the game for you... people die. People get maimed. Brain damaged. Damn it my archer has a permanently broken elbow. Its like its medieval warfare or something.
My advice, until you develop your own tactics... make a front rank of alternating spearmen and pikemen, use spearwall, hold your lines and attack with polearms while (hopefully) holding them back with spears until fatigued, the enemy thins down for mopping up or forced into closing. Especially with Orcs. Keep them at a safe distance. A few archers in the second rank is nice when they improve a bit too. But watch the overflow if they come around the ends of your lines... and force archers into melee. Keep a light weapon in the sack just in case.
...if you like tactical games, it's a must buy. I play all night, browse numerous guides and tips while working. Graphics aren't much and some things could be more varied, game lacks a story mode and is essentially an indie sandbox. Gameplay is more than amazing though, combat system is hard and has a lot od depth. I really hope they make more games like this, with higher bugdet and a story.
Battle Brothers is probably the game I've spent most time playing in the last five years. I've gone back into it at each new DLC, and I'm not even that good. It can be crude and unforgiving but you can also lower the difficulty level. It's a simple premise but the way randomised (minor and major) events and interactions between party members are built, it's always entertaining. Deceivingly simply but very solid combat mechanics. If there's one thing I want from a game like this, it's a huge variety of weapons and equipment and BB fully delivers. It would be great to get even more perks (and further character specialisations to unlock at higher levels) to keep the game fresh in the late game. Great job for such a small team
