Not a very good game

It's less glitched and bugged than the Legends of Eisenwald. I have a beast of PC, and the Legends worked good on it, but in the Bastard windows and dialogues are hellishly slow. You don't lose your army and equipment between missions, which is a great improvement. Story is extremely linear, not engaging and dull. Legends of Eisenwald is great for it's fight mechanics and story, atmosphere etc, and Bastard lacks in story and don't have a lot of fights. SPOILERish thing below!!! At the end you have 3 options, and first one (perhaps the best one) is locked behind reputation (or renown?) level so high that you literally need to chose reputation beneficial dialogue options through the entire game. One no reputation, or one -1 reputation option and you are locked from this ending option for good.

How to make a unusal Game a FLAWED one

First..Bastard is based on Eisenwald, a Strategic RPG with TB-combat and a small part Simulation. The TB and RPG-parts of the Basegame are good, esp. the Story, but with a unusal implementation, the Simulationpart is functional, the graphik functional but outdated and it has some technical Problems. Bastard tried to add a new layer to "The Eisenwald", the Authoritysystem. It should measure and display how well you fill the Role of a Lord in the Eye of the Ruling Class and the Curch, hot good you are to make the people respect you and if you show leadership. But most changes of your Authority are not based on the Mainstory or major decision but on MANY Minievents. Thats not inevitably bad IF the Events a good or at least fun but most are just plain stupid. One Example...You arrive at a tavern and notice that a crowd is going to burn a man, if you ask what is happening the man tells you that he's a scholar and that they want to burn him because he spoke englisch instead of german, if you ask the crowd they tell you "Everybody knows..there's one human , the divine, the demonic and some mysthic languages, why would the humans need more then one language, he did not speake human, he's no Angel..so he must be either a Demon or Mage because he commune with them. Choose a)Burn him +Authorithy b) protect him -Authorithy... Eisenwald uses a mysthic version of the Holy german Empire... I. There was no High German at this time but many dialect that could be very different...try to speak hessian with someone using bavarian...good luck II.Latin was used by the Church, greek by scholars, french and spanish where the courtlanguage several times III.The holy german Empire had a Electorship for the Emporer and several of the kingships, germany included...foreign Lords where common, englisch, spanish, ungarian,... I am running out for words..so making it short...the Events are mostly stupid and that breaks the Authoritysystem, breakings a Coresystem of a Game, breaks the game

Poor fighting and extreme reactions

The game has a lot of flaws to it, the story isn't necessarily one, it's just that everything else really feels... Bad. The graphics feel old, the way you interact with people feels like Mass Effect where you get a rough idea of "People will like/not like this action" and before you know it your character isn't just letting things happen, but going full tarded, I guess because the game's setting is medieval and you really see it in how characters behave, but even so, roleplaying in this game is nearly impossible beyond choosing to follow or not follow the will of everyone around you. The combat itself is pretty okay I'd say, you have three rows of characters, melee, ranged and priests, but the priests rarely do enough to make them worth using, the shooters are either underpowered or overpowered and people fall like rocks, you do not have much to say in how they live or die. The good thing is that you don't have to buy more soldiers, they just skip the next fight, which is hell because a single soldier can make the difference between getting lucky or unlucky. As for the "army" of yours, I really do not get why you, the bastard of the lord, wouldn't just go into the armory and go "All these is mine" and just deck out all your troops with the best weapons. Sure, they could be just basic weapons with no stats, but it feels so dumb. Even leveling up and trying to figure out what is best is hard, a couple hours in and Ijust want to scrap my army for a better one, one which isn't all bad, because you would mostly have to guess how a unit acts. In the end, get it at a heavily discounted price, I do not recommend this game at all, but for a cheap enough price it might be worth looking into.

An interesting game, worth the price

Well worth the cheap price, an rpg that is short and direct. The game is a bit buggy, and the dialogue appears a bit janky at times (seems like translation issues). In addition some of the games mechanics could be clearer, for example I had no clue about using the right mouse button to preview unit upgrades till the end of the first chapter, and with personal items I had to go delving through forums for an explanation. (The personal items do not stack with equipped items, they are simply what the character uses if you don't give them equipment) Performance wise the game crashed a few times but was otherwise fine. Despite this, the core gameplay is fun and feels quite tactical, and the games shorter length probably lends itself to preventing it from running out of steam, by the third act you get a little tired of being sent to the town as far as away as possible and back every single time, and units cap out on progression around this point too. The story is interesting, and so is the philosophy that underlies it. I think the developers have done a good job at interweaving the philosophical views expressed within the game with the game itself. While the moral choices often come off as quite simplistic and shallow, the larger story adheres to the game's statement that "It's not free to be good", the game shines best not on consideration of the morality of these smaller choices, for most of them they are extremely clear anyway. It is because these choices are so clear that authority (a resource that basically functions as a "moral choice" token, and is best thought of as a measure of the peoples opinion of you) management is so interwoven with the games philosophy. In any other game it would probably be restricting, in fact in this game it is restricting too, but with the philosophy in the game, one could argue this is even intentional. You know what choices are the good choices, but the game requires you to play by the rules and choose clear moral wrongs.

Fun but short.

Quite fun for what it is (if you expect AAA experience you will be disappointed). Combat is simple but fun, story is dark and compelling and you can complete whole game in a couple of hours. Graphics are a bit outdated and the game has that "rough" feeling sometimes, but I haven't had any crashes.
