Banner Saga 3 is the final dramatic chapter in the mature, story driven Viking RPG series which has won over 20 awards and has been nominated for 4 BAFTA awards. As the world continues to crumble around you, who can you trust, how will you protect your allies and what choices will you make as the Darkness draws near?
Witness the Banner Saga as you’ve never seen it before as a dark force takes over and effects everything you’ve come to know in the beautifully hand-painted finale of the trilogy.
Choose new playable characters to join your party, including dredge heroes! Take advantage of new upgrade options as they progress in battle.
Deeper strategic combat with the new battle waves system against a myriad of new enemies. The valka spear and heroic titles let players customize their playstyle even further.
Drive your own narrative as you carry over your choices from both Banner Sagas 1 & 2, leading to different climatic endings in this final chapter. No hero is safe.
An all-new original score from Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory.
Damn I dig the story and the suspense and imminent doom is very nicely told. Been sitting on the edge of my seat more than once.
But also I have finished this game in 20h and was idling a lot of it. and each time I did play the game crashed about once every hour. Not that bad because there's always an autosave to resume never hat to do a battle twice, but it's just bad workmanship to release a game that crashes constantly :/
bittersweet I guess. -> wait for a big sale!
In every aspect but the story, the Banner Saga games are almost identical.
That isn’t a bad thing when it comes to the production values: The art is its evocative self, switching between the haunting woodcut-like rendering of the lands and detailed and expressive depictions of the characters during combat and conversation. The music beguiles with haunting horns and overall excellence. The dialogue is sharp and yet relatable, which is a hard needle to thread.
Less welcome is the lack of evolution of the game systems. There are a few more options for character growth, but in the end those just add additional options to increase the very same attributes and hit chances. There is a new class of enemy, but they basically behave the same as the other enemies. The involved numbers become greater, but the game experience stays the same. Especially now that all three installments are easily accessible, it really feels like the Banner Saga is one whole.
So is it worth sticking around through the whole saga? That question hinges on the story sticking the landing.
Has the landing stuck? Mostly yes in my opinion. The End of the World is addressed, how well is dependent on your performance and decisions. The great mystery of how the Apocalypse started is explained. I’m not exactly happy with a few of the turns the story takes, but overall, the finale is well worth witnessing.
Only… a few of the crucial details of the plot remain frustratingly vague, and not in an intentional way. To me it feels like the writers had lost sight of these details at some point.
Still, if you have made it this far, you’ll want to get to the end, to see all the sights the saga has to show you. They are well worth the modest time investment the game asks of you.
TLDR: If you’ve played and enjoyed the first and second Banner Saga, you owe it to yourself to experience the finale. Everybody else should start at the beginning or walk away.
The gameplay didn't change much in this one compared to the first two games. That's a good thing, since it already was pretty fun in the first place, so there wasn't any need to overhaul it completely. The story is entertaining and thrilling until the very end and it delivers a great conclusion to an overall fantastic storyline. If you're a fan of the first two games, then you shouldn't be hesitating to play this one, too. Of course, if you didn't enjoy the previous ones, then this title won't change your opinion about this series. But that probably wasn't the intention the developers had with this game, anyway.
Banner Saga 3 really takes the series in a new direction. It does really well in having a split story between Juno's crew and the main caravan in Arberrang. There is strong interplay between them, as people are trying to survive long enough until a solution to the Darkness is found. Banner Saga 3 answers many of the questions that were raised in previous entrants in the series. Why are the Dredge fighting? Who is the Serpent? What caused the Darkness? Really well done conclusion to the series. May not be as good as previous games, but is still really solid. If you have played previous games, you will like playing this and learning about the story.
The final part to Banner Saga is the best. Choices matter throughout the saga and the march to the end is one of the powerful things I've experienced in gaming.
