The townspeople work, build, get older, have children, and eventually die. Keeping them healthy,
happy, and fed are essential to making a successful town grow. Any structure can be built at any
time, provided that your people have collected the resources to do so.
There are many occupations that the people can perform from farming, hunting, and blacksmithing, to
fishing, teaching, and healing. You can choose to replant forests, mine for iron, and quarry
for rock, and more!
Build a city with any layout you want with almost no restriction on when, what, and where you build.
Keep the population happy and healthy by providing them with food and warm shelter.
Watch the town grow as you assign 20 different jobs to build buildings, grow food, craft tools and clothing, and more!

I was looking for "dwarf fortress look alike" for quite a long time.
This game, so far made me feel horrible, countless villagers lost lives under my rule, due to unexpected food shortages, harsh winters, or lack of tools to chop logs into firewood.
It's a lot easier than DF, and from every but one (fire that killed everybody but last person, who in turn died of cold :( ) crisis, few families always emerged, to start rebuilding their village. Game is awesome, playing it is a real pleasure, but be careful, watching their virtual lives, takes a lot time from your real life!
Well, somebody wrote this game would be perfect for a long winter evening, but i'd rather say it's perfect for one short winter evening, because that's how long this game is probably going to keep you interested. I've played for a few hours and build everything there was, it really felt like i have experienced all of the content and ever since i never bothered to play this game again.
On the plus side: it was entertaining and fun to discover what the game has to offer. Even while writing this review i feel a little urge to play this game once more, maybe.
This isn't a city builder. It's smaller than that, more intimate. Banished is a village builder. In many ways it's incredibly simple. It's straightforward. You have one task and only one: help your villagers survive.
Your first playthroughs will be focused on learning how everything fits together. You will see your population die, you will see the empty village as a remnant of your failure. As you learn the game you'll get better. You'll learn to perfect your village building. You'll become better able to balance expanding your population and managing your resources.
Ultimately, this is a game I keep returning to because I love how relaxing it is. This game is a pure experience and alway worth playing. It is difficult, but it's fair. Any mistakes will be your mistakes, not that of silly AI.
Ok, I am writing this review after 4 years after the game was supposed to be 'fully released'.
Paid 16 Euros. Not worth it. I would give it a 2.5 star review, but it seems I cannot do that.
Anyway. the game concept is nice. And I really like it. As well as the atmosphere of the game overall. But there are some things I cannot go over for a thing that is supposed to have had 4 years to get fixed.
Here is my list of complains:
AI. AI, AI Information Like seriously
AI 1. Logistics AI aka Gathering and distribution. I sometimes have huge piles of materials (coal, logs, stone etc. ) and one or two building projects and the resources do not get distributed there for like 8 seasons or more. (For example, I need a Foresters lounge urgently. Stick one in the middle of the woods not far from town). 9 seasons pass, it cannot start construction because 5 stone missing. I HAVE 85 in STORAGE, but nooo. won't build that despite the fact that I have 3 builders). And further away from the village you have a building, less **** they seem to give about it.
AI 2 WTF AI. Like seriously. 2-3 dudes wonder around in the middle of winter on the other side of the map. They were also essential to my buildings, so they had no reason to go there.
AI 3. Lack of reinforcements. The only way to quickly boost population is through nomads. But for them you need a Trading post. Good luck getting that without an asston of luck to spawn in the right location on the map(for reasons mentioned above)
Overlays, lack of. For a game that makes differentiation of resources a main issue(like not just food, but different types required) the info of how to get them is pretty limited. Like for a Foresters to work, you need areas with OLD trees, not just trees, but old ones. Good luck finding them. Same for Herbalists.
Personally, if you want a city building game, go for Tropico 4, better than 5 imo. It has a funnier tone, more options to play around and more info to the player
like the title, this feels like watching the paint dry.
Except, your paint will be hungry, cold and sick.
And you will do everything you can to make it happy, because hey, that's YOUR paint. Especially that someone threw away this paint and it needs love.
Inspecting homes to see 25yo male living with 5yo female is priceless, same goes for 11yo builder. This game is the shit.
11/10 must play.
Also it's cheaper on GOG than it is on Steam.
Take a note that game was made by a single guy, and he really earned his right to our money.
Perfect city sim.
What I look forward now are updates. New buildings, some tech advancements to be made and environment made more hostile. Oh how it would be great if you needed hunters to fend off predators and other wildlife that could destroy your crops.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
