Banished is a city building game where you control a group of exiled people who are restarting their
lives in the wilderness. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies
from their homeland.
The townspeople work, build, get older, have children, and eventually die. Keeping them healthy,
happy, and fed are essential to making a successful town grow. Any structure can be built at any
time, provided that your people have collected the resources to do so.
There are many occupations that the people can perform from farming, hunting, and blacksmithing, to
fishing, teaching, and healing. You can choose to replant forests, mine for iron, and quarry
for rock, and more!
Build a city with any layout you want with almost no restriction on when, what, and where you build.
Keep the population happy and healthy by providing them with food and warm shelter.
Watch the town grow as you assign 20 different jobs to build buildings, grow food, craft tools and clothing, and more!

Years 1-4 of the game may be quite intense as you learn the game (Your people seem to randomly starve or wander off into a blizzard, or you realize too late that you've used up all the stone with no hope of obtaining more). However, as you become familiar, the difficulty curve drops significantly and it becomes more of a relaxed village-builder with resource management. The base game isn't terribly deep and the only real goal is to keep the village alive and growing, but it's pleasant, nice to look at and has calm music.
Vanilla version is nice sweet and quickly done, though I don't really feel like playing it again.
However... I am going to mod the humpback whale out og it and see where that takes me :D
This game is a pleasant little city-builder without a lot of outside distractions in the form of enemy invasions or anything, however, despite the lack of foreign complications, it's a fine line you walk between feeding, housing and employing all of your citizens and avoiding death from starvation and disease. Timing is everything in this game, with the player needing to establish his priorities right out of the gate in assigning workers, deciding what needs to be built first, and so on. As new buildings, pastures, orchards and farm fields are set up, it is vital to man them intelligently in order to get the most out of your crops and laborers, and then, during the winter, you need to hastily reassign your labor to new tasks, such as hunting, fishing and gathering in order to survive the winter. Every step of the way you are managing resources and deciding just what you need in order to keep your community going. As time goes on, you begin working on better ways to gather resources, such as quarries, mines, tool makers, clothing makers, and so on, and meanwhile trying to balance that with trade, a tavern, even a church and graveyard. There are a LOT of variables to dal with, and you need to be clever and adept in assigning workers and projects so you can continue to grow your community with "just in time" construction and worker assignment. All in all very challenging without being too stressful.
