Well, the game is still in development, so I think it will be much better when it comes out next year.
I really like it so far. Interesting character development and visually stunning, this game has a lot going for it, and I love that it is placed in the world of Baldur's Gate!
Like many here I love the original Baldur's Gate games. This one is very different from setup (incl. turn-based combat, etc.). However, it is still very good and I am curious to find out how the story unfolds.
This review is only for early acces but Early acces was enough to fall in love with this game instantly, I have play many game like the Witcher series, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Gothic all the Elder Scrolls etc but this game is what I been waiting for. I never though I was going to live to see somthing of this quality ever again and I am glad I was completly wrong.
I'm having a great time with the game. I've played the originals and yes, was around when they relaeased and no, it doesn't have that classic Baldurs Gate vibe and well,,, Im ok with that. I respect other reviewers who miss it. 1 and 2 were remarkable and nothing can change that but dang, you can't deny the excellence that Larian put into this. I havent yet played the DOS series but based on what I see with this game, I want to. Ok,,, Im only 5 hours in but super impressed. For 1, its running quite well on my Radeon Rx470 4gb card which I did not expect. No,,, I can't run it in 4k but im getting a solid 82fps on 1440p and its been a very nice experiance. So far the enviornments are are both beautiful and repulsive when needed and really put you into a mystical fantasy state of mind. Yes, I have experianced a few technical issues. The game crashed on my very first level up. I have no idea why and was dissapointed at the time but got to play through some of the early sequences again, made what I thought were minor dialog adjustments and route changes and had some suprisingly different outcomes. I won't go into any spoilers but it was impressive how much of an affect these little descision changes made. The game has not crashed on level ups again and yes,,, I am saving with greater frequency,,, lol. Also,,, when I quit the game and go back in the antialiasing settings always have to be re-set from none back to TAA. The gameplay has more than made up for these early release hitches and will not detract from my 5 star rating. So far the game has been FUN with a compelling story and great characters and I think that most role playing gamers are gonna love it. Im also pretty confident that Larian will work hard to polish work out kinks as they are brought to thier attention. I highly reccomend to any fan of RPG style gaming .
So glad I got this on GOG as I was able to refund it. All my fears for the game were valid.
It's essentially Divinity 3 with an overlay of D&D rules.
The turn based combat, dull and long winded.
The cartoony graphics, the environments that can all go on fire or poison you, all the things I didn't like about DOS 2 were there.
And the "romance" options, unbelievably poorly implemented. It's been described as a harrassment simulator which is pretty accurate, Baldurs Gate HR department need informed.
Anyway, thank you GOG for refunding my cash. I'm off to play BG1 and 2 for the hundredth time.
Before starting: I want to clarify that by average I mean games before game industry became filled with WOKE incompetent people where releasing working game was normal.
So let's go over points that are bad:
- Beyond Act 1 game is not well tested. In fact I'm pretty sure Larian didn't play test themself all possible variations within story otherwise they would know how many inconsistencies there are. Going on expected 'good' path should save you from most of story related bugs
- Minthara as companion is currently broken (likely due to lack of testing), especially if you go my route by not helping goblins or druids, completely skipping final decision
- 5E casual edition for casual people
-Pretty bad lore wise story, while it is on its own engaging, but it is pure fanfiction.
- Typical Larian writing. Note that comparing to Original Sin 2 it is improvement, but nevertheless it is pretty weak beyond main story narrative
- Sad female characters. Kinda obvious but Larian do suffer from SJW illness so they made most women look masculine (Karlach is just man cosplaying as 'woman' for example). The only good looking Minthara is bugged as I mentioned
- Companions' stories are for the most part boring on their own. They are only saved in some cases being tightly integrated in main plot, but otherwise pretty meh (this obviously stems from Larian having bad writers as I mentioned above)
So now, despite how many bad points I say, my review is 4 starts. Why?
There are few strong points that are important:
- Solid bug-free gameplay. So while there are a lot of bugs related to story and its flags, mechanically game is very well tested (obviously thanks to long EA and people testing game for free). Despite only having 12 levels, you can feel power progression thanks to itemization which lets you create quite powerful characters by the end of game.
- Aside from story bugs, there high level of overall polish (rare due to modern gamedev culture)
- Overall it is solid game
