Misleading title
Not a good old game, but mockery of Baldurs Gate. It is a new Divinity, fans of BG should stay away, but if you enjoyed Divinity, this should be a must buy.

A single-player gem
GoG reports I spent 42 hours in this game, yet I think I am only halfway through Act 2. I checked this game out during early access some time ago, so I kinda knew what to expect. I will mention all of the negative things straight away, no spoilers: - Inventory system is a bit chaotic and hard to organize - Camera tends to do exactly what you don't want it to do - I experienced a semi-game-breaking bug at the beginning of Act 2 at the end of the quest related to crafting powerful items. Many other players experineced the same issue - In a different location of Act 2 I experienced a funny non-game-breaking bug, when I claimed a powerful artifact twice in a row using different mechanics -- but only got one copy in the inventory, so it was just an extra cutscene for me Now, to the good things. It is very, very hard to find the limits of what you can and cannot do. The most exciting and important fights I had I waged with words during conversations. There is basically no 'good' or 'bad', it is up to you as a player to choose how to deal with a given situation. You can play as the most holy and pureharted creature in the whole world, or team up with the most vile abominations that want to see the world burn. Or jsut deceive both parties and play them as you wish. When unsure, talk to a closest rat, they are quite smart. I feel as if every thing, every creature is placed there for some reason, and you can leverage it if you know how. Many locations are twice as large as you think they are -- you just need to find a hidden path. If single-player story driven RPG is something you might like, this game will be a great choice. Companion stories are sometimes a bit too dramatic, but nevertheless each is unique and engaging (and sad). The main storyline has not yet fully unfolded for me, so it is just there as a background. The side quests are truly marvelous and sometimes reveal disturbing things, and I highly recommend you to check them out yourself.

Excellent RPG but not-yet legendary
All-in Baldur's Gate is an excellent RPG and it is money well-spent. Why four stars then? Because the name "Baldur's Gate" is not just a name, but also an obligation. An obligation, that has been almost fullfilled. Almost! Without spoilers, I can say that the last big story arc of the game (named as Act III) is suffering a quite noticeable drop in the quality of quests, immersion and storytelling. It feels rushed and crunched to the bitter end, with plenty of choices being... forced, railroaded and disconnected. That applies sadly to the endings, which felt for me just bad, cut short and underwhelming. The companions are awesome, but their interactions are by no means on the awesome level I remember from old Baldurs. There isn't that much banter, they do not really form relationships/rivalries with each other and it is clear that plenty of work has been put into some of them, while the rest feels rather lackluster and lacks content. A quite controversial point are also the romances, after playing I am led to believe that some devs/writers behind that were really into polyamory, that applies to almost all characters at some point in the game and breaks the immersion in some cases. Not to mention that starting of the relationships is sometimes too easy and feels a bit forced. Pity, that visuals took over immersion and depth here. Do not get me wrong, the game is still very, very good, but not legendary. Act I of the game was one of the best RPG experiences I had in the last decade, but game does not keep up that level of immersion in the later parts of the story. BG3 will allow you to bring your heroic or villanous alter ego to life, but my advice? Wait some time until Larian polishes the game even further and then buy it.

Not as good as it thinks it is,
Oh Larian. So much potential undermined by dogma. This is good game, occasionally brilliant. The problem is that not everyone plays, or wants to play, the same way. Good grief. Turn based combat sequences that last for forty minutes (or longer), which can easily be flipped by a single wrong mouse click at the wrong time. Moments when (due to the way the rules are applied) you can win a forty minute fight only to have former allies turn on you and slaughter your weakened party, meaning you basically have to start again. Git gud you might say. Never mind that I've been playing DnD games for years: give me a reason to git gud. The story is pedestrian, and bloated. The companions are just annoying. The humour. Oh dear. The wokeness of the game (which is fine for me and I approve) is undermined entirely when one npc has a go at you if you haven't slept with any of your companions. FFS. Somewhat missing the point. Apparently, you must want to go on a shagfest to be normal in Larian's world. I repeat, this is a good game. Best RPG ever? GIve me a break.
