Favorite game of 2023-2024 but glitchy
It's almost a perfect game. Loads of effort went into bringing the D&D experience to life, and that's quite a challenge given the complexity of the game and how much innovation / nonlinear storytelling is entailed. So ofc there are constraints in any programmed version that don't exist in real life; the devs can't anticipate every single sort of action a player might want and be able to take under every given circumstance. But it does a nice job balancing a wide range of play options with the demands of a central narrative. Maybe in the future, as LLMs progress, our D&D videogame experience will evolve. Maybe in that future, if there is one, those options will support PvP/Co-op multiplayer modes. This is the closest thing I've found to Ultima Online since those good old early days of MMO communities, except that it's single-player and a less open-world. Still, it scratches that itch pretty well in many ways. My biggest criticism is likely the same that most people have: they released it before it was ready, and some of the patches made it worse. Certain glitches in Act 2, like the Shadow kid thing, can make it impossible to complete the central quest of that act, and cause you to lose Druid Daddy as your ally. Something as simple & stupid as a game glitch shouldn't completely destroy a major narrative thread in a finished, polished game, and yet you're able to complete the entire level before you even realize you need to go back to an earlier save point to undo potentially one of the first things you did (kill the ghost kid who attacks you) in order to finish that central quest of the act. There weren't really any clues that you shouldn't kill a ghost kid, aside from the fact that it's a kid. But I mean...he's already dead. Come on. What's more, is even if you don't "kill" him, but just "kill" his creepy dead ghost parents the wrong way, you'll still trigger the glitch, potentially, and fail to end the shadow curse. There are various other lesser glitches.
