Worst UI ever
I wanted to play this game, I really did but the way camera and movement are coded is the worst. My challenge is that literally everything that is great in the game requires a lot of moving both the character and the camera and it's just not worth the burden to me. Think about it this way, would you buy a Lamborghini equipped with the little chinlink steering wheel Cheech had in his lowrider in Up In Smoke? If the answer is yes, then you'll love this game...

I liked it. 3.5...
I'd give this game a solid 4 out of 5 stars if it weren't for the slow combat. Whoever the genius is who thought watching 15 trash mobs move a few inches across your screen is fun really needs to rethink what "fun" actually is. Larian should have implemented BOTH turn based comabt and real time with pause, or at the very least speed the combat up. There are several RPGs out there with both options available. I didn't find the combat all that challenging. It was just so long and drawn out that I nearly fell asleep. I get that they like turn based, that they're trying to recreate a table top experience, but I feel that in this day and age it doesn't translate well in a single player computer game. I think it would be a boon to the game and it's player base to inculde both, IMO. However, even though the combat was a bore, I still enjoyed what the game has to offer. It looks great, employs a cast of amazing voice actors and the writing isn't bad. I especially loved the characters. It was surprisingly not as buggy as I thought it would be. The only thing major that I came across was a lot of crashing when loading a quicksave. Another thing - this game doesn't have anthing in common with the Baldur's Gate games that came before it, its very much Divinity vaguely based in the Forgotten Realms. It even started similiar to the last Divinity game. Captive in a ship and it crashes on a beach! I still think it has a ton of potential and I'm looking forward to the final product. Here's hoping they iron out that sloooooooow combat problem.

Headed in the right direction . . .
First things first. Baldur's Gate 3 is not GOING to be a great game . . . Because it is ALREADY a great game. Having played through 50+ hours of the entire EA material, I'm thoroughly invested in the characters, the plot and the world, and I will be suffering until full release. TBH the game as it stands now is a 4.2, but it has the potential to be 4.5 to 4.7 and rank among the true masterpieces out there (BG 1&2, Witcher 3, DAO). Technical Review (the bad): 1. Most cut-scenes are messed up. Bad camera angles, characters meld with each other, etc. Assume this will all be ironed out at full release. 2. Crashes hard about once per every 20 hours of gameplay, often in the same locations (serious fights). Again it's EA . . . 3. Enemy AI is well done, but very very slow... Technical Review (the good): 1. Combat system is well interpreted and works pretty well. (It seems to me that the DnD ruleset has imposed a certain "descipline" upon Larian that I did not see in DOS2, and I LIKE that discipline. Yes there are still exploding barrels and all that, but many of the fights in DOS2 were so unbalanced that it seems like you were expected to be OP to win, and that detracted from the game for me). 2. Mouse/keyboard controls work well and quickly become second nature. 3. Sound/Audio/music is well done, and fits the game. Non-Technical: 1. Writing, story, character interaction is headed in the right direction (4.0). This is what lost me in DOS2, and one reason I quitDOS2 mid-story. I had no attachment to the story, the lore or the characters in DOS2 and so it became a meaningless grind for me. Not so with BG3. Yes there is still some flushing out that needs to be done, but clearly Larian has learned lessons from Bioware and CD Project Red. 2. The world is beautiful and feels real (4.5). 3. If EA Patch 6 is 30-40% of the entire game, then the game is going to be the right length. Summary: Great so far, keep going!
