It took me a long time to even be able to play this because every time I started I just didn't like it, it wasn't fun. I finally put it in story mode because I realized part of the problem is the combat. A big part, I hate it. It's the worst part of the game by far, so tedious. The more enemies you're facing the worse it is.
Story mode allowed me to at least get through all the battles although not quickly, it made it less painful at least. This allowed me to experience the story of BG3 which in my playthough was pretty good, little was contrived, pretty well written and definintely good acting.
I don't play D&D and for someone who doesn't know the system it's pretty complex when it comes to builds and skills. I don't know if I ever really took good advantage of what my characters could do. Some seemed pretty useless in combat. Towards the end I got legendary gear and items that didn't fit anyone's builds so they were useless, most of them in fact.
As stated in other areas you end up with thousands of unused gold assuming you loot and sell throughout the game. There is evidence of an abandoned crafting system that might have made build/gear synergy more interesting.
Ultimately it was a fun story to experience once but the complexity of the builds and rest system with the oh so painful (to me) combat system make me never want to play it again.
*FWIW I think they could speed up or even skip enemy turns given that it could pause on any events where you get to have a reaction. Would have no negative effects and would speed things up.
Larian has finally hired someone who can sculpt faces that don't look like poop, yay! The dice-rolling is fun, the story picks up at a decent pace after the boring mindflayer start, however ...
... the combat is the worst I've seen since Torment - Tides of Numenera. ITS SOOOOO BOOOOORING TO FIGHT!
Action points in DOS2 were already boring, but this 1-attack-per-turn is even worse! I don't know what the Larian devs were smoking when they came up with this, but I deeply hope they'll fix it before the full release. I literally dread going into battle because of this tedious mechanic.
I am not a D&D Gamer, and I haven't played the first two games. I come from more dynamic and action based RPG's like Guild Wars 2, The Witcher 3 or Skyrim. But I have to say that Baldurs Gate 3 really grows on me. I like the pacing and the round based combat system. I love how many Character-, Dialog-and Storyoptions you get. I haven't seen a game that is so much "choose your own adventure"-style like BG3.
I have to say, that for me it's still overwhelming and a bit complex, but I am having fun nonetheless.
If you don't have high expectations cause you are a D&D or Baldur's Gate Veteran and you are okay with not understand everything right away, give it a shot!
Cons (my point of view):
- most companions are uninspired
- too many dice rolls
- only the initiating character can solve the skill check
- character customization is lacking
- too many cutscenes (every character interaction is a cutscene)
- the illusion of choice in combat encounters or for solving a problem (there are a lot of choices in the game that influences your game and story. I only mean choices on how to win or approach a fight and similar decisions)
