For a remake of one of my favorite games, I'm not satisfied.
The game itself, well OK, it's still as good. But I was expecting three things for this version:
- keep the game wonderful (this one is OK... mostly)
- better graphics
-native linux support
- well, maybe a fourth, some bug fixes and enhancements
The graphics don't actually seem to be better that the original ones, like for BGEE (probably easier to seem better for this older game). No really visible enhancement on my 1920x1080 screen (I didn't even test it on my bigger resolution screen).
BUT there is a real catch! The game lost the french localization! (and many others it seems). So it doesn't actually do "at least as good", that's a major regression.
Is this the best CRPG ever made or is that pure hyperbole? Well, a little of both. It's hard to say it is the best when so many other amazing CRPGs exist. This Enhanced Edition version of the game is a solid update from the original and worth consideration. All of the EE versions of the old Black Isle infinity engine are well done
I could waste 1k words telling you about it, but I don't need to. It's great and if you like CRPGs this is among the best
I had first played "Baldur's Gate" in the early 2000's and thoroughly enjoyed it. This re-issue is simply superb. First, the game itself is super-stable and runs perfectly on Windows 11. The character/team creation class/kit options are deep, limitless in their possibilities and offer immense replay value. I spent hours on the Baldur's Gate wiki learning about all of the different character races and class/kit options, so I could create an interesting and powerful team. The game itself is immersive, satisfying and still hugely fun to play. This game is considered a classic RPG, and, with good reason. The story is great. sound effects and voice-acting are first-rate. Battles can be fought with different tactics. Want to plunge through enemy hordes as a fighter brute? Prefer magical attacks? Or, want to use thief sneak attacks? You can do it all. This is one of the best PC RPG gaming experienced of all time. Buy it, play it and enjoy it.
The original BG2 game has been removed from the store, meaning that now, if you want the original game, you are forced to buy this Enhanced Edition by Beamdog. Why do they do this? Because otherwise nobody would buy this "enhanced" thing! Beamdog's version was a failure and now they try to make profit from the success of the original version (which is *not* their product!). That's just very low.
...the game I own more copies of than any other, with the possible exception of Morrowind, but who's counting? Incidentally, it is also the last game I ever bought on release and the only one I've ever bought the Collector's Edition of, but that's beside the point. In any case, I can't believe that I'm only doing my third complete playthrough right now, and I'm amazed by how much I MISSED the first two times! That's because the companions have so much content that you don't get to see when you don't have them in your party, and the first time I mostly stuck to the first few I encountered (of which some DON'T have their own quests) and didn't change the party basically until the end, and the second time I solo'd a Kensai->Mage, which was fun in its own right but again, I missed all the companion stuff.
So, do yourself a favor and not only play with companions, but don't be afraid to switch them around a bit, to spice things up. Yes, this may result in sub-optimal XP distribution, but then again you will gain a lot of XP for the additional quests and A LOT more playtime and fun!
There was also a time when I used to be a bit disappointed by the lack of open wilderness locations compared to the first one, but I must admit they tended to be somewhat empty in BG1 and the (still many and much more diverse) environments that are there are so immensely dense with content it is absolutely staggering.
It is also a much more complex and sophisticated game, in a good way! In open world games like Elder Scrolls I tend to enjoy the early game more than the late game because of the greater sense of accomplishment and danger, but not here! Yes, your characters get more and more powerful, but so do your enemies - in a good way, not the level scaling crap of, say, Oblivion. And with great power come hundreds of awesome spells! Mastering them is certainly a challenge, but one that's very rewarding. The AD&D rules may be a bit janky, but it's not a perfect game, just very, very close
