The rhythm game that touched my heart

Unlike other rhythm games, AVICII Invector features a 3D environment. You can not only move side-to-side, but also roll, so that what was once a wall becomes the floor. Added to that are sequences of free flight, where you must steer your ship through rings in the air. Before you is a dazzling spectacle of dancing lights. It's exhilarating to barrel down the track at top speed, hitting every note based solely off muscle memory. On the downside, the camera angle can make the notes hard to see, while at times they blend into the background. Two are also frustratingly similar in shape and color. This turned out to be a far more emotional experience than I expected. In light of real life events, I found it difficult not to get a little choked up when songs touched on the topic of depression and being gone from the world one day. There was a feeling of connectedness from playing the tracks this way that I wouldn't have experienced from listening to the songs on their own or watching a music video. That is not to say the game is a downer. The music is quite upbeat for the most part, and hopefulness is a recurring theme. I readily recommend this to anyone with any interest in AVicii's music. * 4 difficulty levels, Beginner to Hard. Accessible for a novice to challenging for an expert. * Input calibration. Hit the notes in tune with the song but no visual prompt, or set latency manually. * My vintage Logitech Dual Action gamepad worked out-of-box, but there were no button press indicators on the notes. This wasn't an issue with a keyboard. My gamepad was misidentified as a Stadia controller in the options menu; I had to remap everything and memorize the controls. * No leaderboards on GOG, but the "Toggle highscore" and "Toggle stats" menu items weren't removed. * Multiplayer is local splitscreen, up to 4 players. One can play with a keyboard, but everyone else will need a gamepad. 3h15m spent on base game tracks in Easy mode. 36h30m in total, including DLC.

Good game on its own merits

This game is an auto-buy for fans of Tim Bergling (Avicii), but what about those of us who know nothing about him? Firstly, the music is very good and it does lend itself very well to this kind of game. If, like me, you weren't a fan of Tim Bergling, chances are you will be after playing a few tracks. Visually, the neon sweet and crisp, and you see what you need to see clearly. Your attention is on the markers, so peripheral details would have been useless. What you need is the mood, and the game delivers that. It's fairly unique in how forgiving it is. There's practically no way to fail. If you crash, you just respawn a bit before where you crashed. So your only pressure is to rack up enough points to unlock the next batch of tracks. It's not very hard, but it's not boring either because your attention is constantly needed. The one flaw that I found is that occasionally, the markers aren't well aligned with the rhythm of the music, so if you get into a pattern where the music drives your reflexes, you may miss a marker or two. You have to sync with the visual cues, not with the music. Again, that's not very hard because you have to pay attention to those cues anyway to know what to do, but it can be distracting to be off the music's beat. Maybe it's not a bug but a feature to trip you up if you get lazy. Overall, it's an odd, but pleasant blend of adrenaline and relaxation and much better than you'd expect from a game that's riding on the coattails of a defunct artist's popularity. I'd go so far as to say that it's my favorite rhythm game in my collection.

Tim Bergling Tell-All

The main cartoon character (who is the anti-goth-Lofi girl) is stuck on a quest to find her chocolate bar with almonds. She is constantly struggling with this loss, and needs to find her way back home, but needs to rediscover herself in the process. The allegories, metaphors, allusion she grips with; from death, to grieving through the music (as she sits on each worlds ledge vibing through her headphones to Tim Bergling), and the eventual path back home was an emotional journey like no other. This had me crying by the end needing desperately to finish the OBLIVION world with HEAVEN(Chris Martin-Coldplay in the Bright Cut) to see how this journey ends and my sense was that this was Tim's rebirth, an homage to his passion without restraints. He dealt with so many struggles (ultimately the demons winning), like so many of us, and I felt within my soul. Each failure of "HEAVEN" my way of feeling closer, to something ethereal. The culmination to my own journey ending, and through it I felt the cold harsh reality of all the people who've died in my life, awash with even more emotion thinking of those lost to us all (Malcolm McCormick, Jarad Higgins, etc) and their inspiration and light. This truly is one of the most moving games I've played. Its identity, its symbolism, its roots, and its heart and soul. I felt every lyric, every rhythm, vocal. This game is truly one of kind. Songs List: Valley ('Cant Catch Me, Pure Grinding, What I Would Change It To, The Nights') Space ('Waiting For Love, Gonna Love Ya, You Be Love, Friend Of Mine') Ice ('Sunset Jesus, Fade Into Darkness, Wake Me Up, Lonely Together') City ('Without You, Hey Brother, Levels, I Could Be The One, You Make Me') Forest ('Lay Me Down, For a Better Day, Broken Arrows, True Believer, Talk To Myself') Oblivion ('Fades Away, Tough Love, HEAVEN') DLC packs: Tim (Peace of Mind, Freak Bad Reputation, SOS, Heart Upon My Sleeve) Magma (Addicted To You, My Feelings For You, Seek Bromance, Sunshine, Trouble)
