The rhythm game that touched my heart
Unlike other rhythm games, AVICII Invector features a 3D environment. You can not only move side-to-side, but also roll, so that what was once a wall becomes the floor. Added to that are sequences of free flight, where you must steer your ship through rings in the air. Before you is a dazzling spectacle of dancing lights. It's exhilarating to barrel down the track at top speed, hitting every note based solely off muscle memory. On the downside, the camera angle can make the notes hard to see, while at times they blend into the background. Two are also frustratingly similar in shape and color. This turned out to be a far more emotional experience than I expected. In light of real life events, I found it difficult not to get a little choked up when songs touched on the topic of depression and being gone from the world one day. There was a feeling of connectedness from playing the tracks this way that I wouldn't have experienced from listening to the songs on their own or watching a music video. That is not to say the game is a downer. The music is quite upbeat for the most part, and hopefulness is a recurring theme. I readily recommend this to anyone with any interest in AVicii's music. * 4 difficulty levels, Beginner to Hard. Accessible for a novice to challenging for an expert. * Input calibration. Hit the notes in tune with the song but no visual prompt, or set latency manually. * My vintage Logitech Dual Action gamepad worked out-of-box, but there were no button press indicators on the notes. This wasn't an issue with a keyboard. My gamepad was misidentified as a Stadia controller in the options menu; I had to remap everything and memorize the controls. * No leaderboards on GOG, but the "Toggle highscore" and "Toggle stats" menu items weren't removed. * Multiplayer is local splitscreen, up to 4 players. One can play with a keyboard, but everyone else will need a gamepad. 3h15m spent on base game tracks in Easy mode. 36h30m in total, including DLC.
