Description
Avernum is the Empire’s underground penal colony. There, those who are uncomfortable for the ruling Regime are thrown in via magical portal to never be heard from again. You have been exiled to the dark, volcanic pits of Avernum, filled with foul monsters, constant warfare, and thousands upon thousands of your fellow prisoners. This is your punishment for not fitting in, for daring to speak your mind against the powers that be. You have a choice: accept your fate and die in this cold, dank underworld or take up arms against the tyrant who stripped you of your life, your status, your freedom. Will you be the first to escape Avernum?

This is an excellent game, dialogue really helps pace it. I was so excited to get the bundle for all these titles, but I'm having an issue right now recieving keys to register all the games. Hopefully this will get cleared up soon.
Although this series does contain epic amounts of content, play time, and a fantastic plot, I can't say I like it. It's a remake of another series by the same company called Exile. In the Avernum remake, you have a smaller team, fewer options, and a graphics update that gives you a pseudo-3d 3/4 view, but frankly makes the combat terrible. Aiming any AoE spells is a nightmare. Fortunately, the company has a free copy of Exile 1-3 on their site. Unfortunately, you can only run it if you install dosbox and a win3.1 emu and I can't seem to get them to want to cooperate together.
The original is definitely worth it though. Skip Avernum. Get Exile. Substance over graphics.. and these graphics are actually from the past few years. They don't even have the nostalgia value to cover for them.
Holy cow, the early levels in this game can be brutal. I've died 10+ times now and haven't even reached level 2. This already feels like the type of game that's going to encourage a ton of save scumming. I'd give it 1 star but considering I'm throwing in the towel after only a few hours that seems a bit harsh.
DISCLAIMER:
This review is only based on graphics issue I'm having. I'd love to give this game a chance, but at the current state of events I simply can't due to vision impairment.
This game is made in very low resolution. Period. There's no scaling option built in making the playfield take small section in the middle of the scren and being a massive strain to my eyes. Running multiple screen setup I will not let any game change my primary screen resolution forcing me to skip this one, which I'm extremely sad about.
