Description
Avernum is the Empire’s underground penal colony. There, those who are uncomfortable for the ruling Regime are thrown in via magical portal to never be heard from again. You have been exiled to the dark, volcanic pits of Avernum, filled with foul monsters, constant warfare, and thousands upon thousands of your fellow prisoners. You have a choice: accept your fate and die in this cold, dank underworld or take up arms against the tyrant who stripped you of your life, your status, your freedom. Will you be the first to escape Avernum?

Avernum: The Complete Saga features six complete dungeon crawling RPGs designed for anyone who longs for an epic quest, enjoys a fascinating and engaging tale, or misses the classic days of role playing games. Excellent set of indie RPGs

My adventure with Spiderweb RPGs began back in middle school, when a 13-year old kid got himself a copy of Exile: Escape from the Pit (Exile was the original version of the Avernum series). Since then, I've bought and played every single Spiderweb game, and for a good reason. In the times where RPG games are all about flashy graphics, feature uninspired, copy-pasted fantasy worlds and little-to-no exploration, Avernum games have all of this - an original fantasy world, lots of exploration, plus decent turn-based mechanics that make playing the game a pleasure instead of a chore. Sure, these games won't win anyone with graphics (quite outdated) or sound (virtually none present), but for any die-hard fantasy fan, it's a must.

Good prices? Why not?

I've been playing the Avernum series since it was the Black Crystalis saga. There is a large amount of customization to every party, from traits to spells and even races. The traits themselves are interesting enough, almost like miniature backstories. It's really the story that will get you. In every instance, you start out as a small group of adventures working for the military. From there the world slowly draws you in, from the gruff soldiers, to dragons with hearts of gold. You'll travel the cave like world to find treasure, adventure and fame. The combat and GUI can be a little sticky, but it takes only about 5 minutes to get used to it. Honestly, if you need to kill some time, are bored with your standard rpg's, or would like a game with a unique interface, this is what your looking for.

Good series

I have played Avernums 2-5,, and I liked those games a lot. Large area to explore with lots of cool stuff to find, and and best of all, basically you can fully customize your group in the beginning, with few races and many traits to choose from. Combat works well, and quests have some variation. Well worth the price.

Spoiler Free: Easily in the top 5 CRPG

Facts are easy to find, this review is all emotion and feelings. Avernum is a masterpiece. A few dozen megabytes holds a massive underground world that pulls from the primary sources of the fantasy genre. The simple, clean graphics will pull you into this world of lizards, mushrooms, and magic. Run around and do quests, kill stuff, build your own special snowflake PC. It's great, and I think superior, to games based in Faerun

awesome

I was playing this series right from the earlier beginnings, when it was still called the "Exile" saga. Exile/Avernum is not about 1st person experience in a graphically enjoyable world. It is not about personal skill with game interfaces in battles. Its graphics were very low style even in the 90s. Its battle system is quite simple and turn based. Avernum is all about the story. It is well written like a very good novel that you pick up and can't drop until you have read it in total and recognize it's 5am and your alarm clock will ring in 30 minutes to get up for work. The story is immersive and huge. You have enormous areas to explore, hundreds of quests to solve, hundreds of unique characters to talk to. Your actions change the world you are playing in. Nearly every single NPC has something worthwhile to say to you. You get loads of hidden areas, little sidequests, interesting shops, a good leveling system, uniquely customizable player characters and a combat system that needs good thinking and sometimes strategy and creativity. The only real downside are the meagre game sounds. There are no voices, and only a very limited set of sounds that will become very repetetive in a short time. Another minor downside is the vastness of quests and areas - where do I find that woman again, that gave me this quest I just completed? But if you play these games as long and as often as I was (and am) doing it, you will know sooner or later. Just don't stop looking and you will find that quest giver sooner or later - and during that "quest" you will explore a dozwn new areas, find a score of new quests, recognize some new adversaries and perhaps find out what this story is all about. Or save (or end) the world as it is. Have a lot of fun!
