Great Game!
I'm hard to please when it comes to crpg and I am very pleasantly suprised at how good the quality of this experience is. Very well done!

A Golden Piece
I Highly recommend this piece of art. For everyone who is into story/narrative driven games, this is for you. A valuable treasure in your collection, to come back to when the stress of the outer world lets you relax. And the best part? There is the whole series!

I have been searching for this!
I remember the sleepless nights and countless hours I spent playing Spiderweb's games under a blanket on my 1995 Toshiba laptop back in the early 2000's instead of cramming for the math test I was about to take. Lately I have been having dreams about the original Exile and Nethergate games but couldn't remember what they were exactly called. While scrolling through GOG the Avernum games popped up on sale and WOW was it a blast of nostalgia!! These games are amazing and have such an engaging story that is so incredibly rare for modern games. I just texted my supervisor and told him that I'm probably going to be sick on Monday while I spend this entire weekend marathoning these classic games.

A modern classic done in a classic style
Avernum: Escape from the Pit is a wonderful RPG that harkens back to an older age of RPGs. It doesn't have great graphics but has a style that stands out from the sprites to the drawn pictures you see for skills. Music is nonexistent with only ambient sounds to keep you company as you explore the underground world you've been thrown into. The five stars comes from the gameplay and story. Overall, the gameplay is easy to learn but with enough complexities to keep it engaging for the length of the roughly forty hour campaign. You control a party of four heroes with your standard RPG classes (warrior, rogue, cleric, and wizard) that can be further customize if you wish. Combat is turn-based using standard squares much like a TTRPG. Monsters come in all shapes and sizes with various skills, magic, or abilities to keep you challenged. For a first time player, I'd recommend sticking to Casual to avoid getting bogged down in the details but veterans might be more comfortable on Normal or Hard. Quests and combat reward experience which grants levels and points to add to skills (one attribute point and two skill points). Spells are learned through trainers rather than gained so make sure to save your gold for training. The story is simple. You have been thrown into Avernum, a vast series of caves far underground, by the surface Empire, which controls the entire world. There isn't a main quest per say but rather three ways to beat the game. Once free from the starting area, you can venture to whatever part of Avernum you want but I'd recommend against trying to head to the distant parts where higher level enemies wait to stab you in the dark. The game does a good job guiding you a suggested path while not forcing you onto a set path. The quests themeselves are well-written enough with plenty of twists on classic tropes, but what Avernum does really well is the world-building. It is a world filled with danger and mystery that demands you to learn more.
