Description
Avernum 2: Crystal Souls is an epic, indie fantasy role-playing adventure in a unique, massive world, full of strange caves, cunning dungeons, and the alien inhabitants of the underworld. Fight to complete up to three game-winning quests. Explore a massive nation of tunnels and caverns, seeking over 100 towns and dungeons. Master over 60 spells and battle disciplines and hunt for hundreds of magical artifacts.

The surface world is commanded by the tyrannical Empire, the eternal power that controls all known lands. Everyone who spoke out, misbehaved, or didn’t fit in was cast into the dark, volcanic pits of Avernum, far below the surface. They were meant to die. Instead, these exiles survived, gained power, and struck back. They assassinated the lord of the Empire.

Now the Empire will have revenge. They have invaded Avernum, seizing cave after cave and destroying your people. Your land needs a hero, and it needs it now. If you can’t find a way to stop them, and soon, you are all doomed.
  • Epic fantasy adventure with over 40 hours of gameplay. Explore an enormous underworld, with multiple nations, alien cultures, and over 100 towns and dungeons.
  • Three separate game-winning quests. There are many ways to fight the invaders. Do just one of them or all three!
  • Unique races and settings make Avernum different from any adventure out there.
  • Dozens of side quests and hundreds of magical artifacts.
  • Rich game system with over 60 spells and battle disciplines and a multitude of beneficial character traits to choose from.

Good But Not Nearly Great

The story saves this game but even here there are awkward contradictions that get in the way. I don't think the vinhai (my pet name for them) story line was completely worked out. Pizza brain storming sessions, I think -- or something like that. I greatly enjoyed the first Avernum game despite many crudities. There was so much to explore it was possible to overlook very annoying features of the game. Was technology that primitive when Avernum was first released? Seems unlikely since I recall games from that era with great graphics and awesome gameplay. My first complaints -- why is everything so small on the screen? I admit my eyesight is not the best but the tiny icons make combat even more difficult than it needs to be. Why are there so many "empty" areas, devoid of anything? Why does the player have to go through an hour of puzzle-solving to find the reward is something he'll have to sell, and at criminal prices, because he can't use it? Or worse, you find a crystal, maybe, and some (insert shocked face) useless crap. I feel I'm at a "Discount Bling Shop" that sells baubles nobody else could move. After many attempts to adjust the mouse settings to get rid of the annoying instability, I gave up and just put up with it. The gameplay controls in this game were not well thought out, either. But the lack of anything in so many places is a sure sign the developers pushed the rock halfway up the top before losing all control. The vastness -- despite the unending emptiness -- gives the game its charm. The quests and puzzles are often good, and even better than better ranked games, but there are just too many irritation factors. I have an idea. Instead of all that dead space in the game, how about adding another "view" -- drop in closer during combat? So some of us can be sure to click the right square?

Microscopic torture

These torturous Avernum games are the same torture of struggling to see the tiny 2 pixel characters without a microscope while dying and reloading the game every 10 minutes in an endless loop of agony. The player misses at least 95% of all attacks melee, ranged and magic while getting hit by 100% of enemy attacks including acid spray that can wipe out a party in 1 or 2 turns. The monsters never miss, they are nearly impossible to ever hit, and they have literally thousands of hitpoints so it takes around 20 minutes to kill one group if you don't die in an endless loop of attack - miss - get hit - heal - get burned by acid or fire - then attack again and miss - get hit - etc. I play my other games with no reloading and enjoy the immersion. But in Avernum your party gets wiped out over & over & over & over so you reload or uninstall - only 2 choices. The developers hate the player and want to torture us for buying these Avernum torture games. They are not really games cause you are are not allowed to play them.
