Description
Attentat 1942 is a historically-accurate adventure told through the eyes of World War 2 survivors. Many moral dilemmas and existential struggles await you on your way to discover the troubled past of your family. Written and made by professional historians.

It's 1942 and Reinhard Heydrich, the ruler of the Nazi occupied Czech lands appointed by Hitler, was assassinated. Nazi retaliation was brutal. Your grandpa was among the victims, sent to a concentration camp.

But why? What role did he play in the attack? Why didn’t he tell his family? Was he brave or reckless?

Immerse yourself in a story about love, friendship and heroism among the horrors of a world conflict. Confront witnesses, experience the everyday life under Nazi rule and uncover the fate of your family in this award-winning game about World War II.

  • dive into deep-branching dialogues, where your choices matter
  • experience history through interactive comics and memories, hide resistance leaflets from the Gestapo or flee from a Nazi prison
  • explore rare digitized film footage and historical items

The best not-game of the year.

This is an amazing, important experience. Meticulous research, moving and authentic. This isn't a game so much as a choice driven interactive history class. Your choices do matter, but they are mainly moral or practical choices (like where to hide the letters from the Gestapo). It's absolutely packed with real history, the full motion video is heartbreaking and beautiful, It's a treasure box that will take at least one more time to unpack. And it doesn't overstay it's welcome. This might be my favorite GOG purchase of the year, it's good enough that I'm buying it for my best friend. Not graphically demanding, runs on my potato, but the graphics are very well done, and some of the fmv is heartbreakingly good. The audio is crisp and clean, voices are mainly Czech, excellent subtitles. Controls are about as easy as it gets. Not sure about age appropriateness. It's honest, which makes it brutal at times. I'd probably give it to a smart 12 year old, and talk to them after. Seriously, it's been years since a game moved me like this.

Can you even classify this as game?

Disclaimers: I'm Czech, and I have grown up in the Sudetenland, though much, much, much later after the history described here. I also purchased this on a promise I made, not because of my interest in the era (this will become relevant). This program - I can't really think of this piece of software as "game" - aims at the same niche as Oregon Trail. It's primary objective is to teach you something, move you, make you think, make you feel. The base setting is in real, significant bit of history, and employs fictional characters to tell a fictional, but believable story. In a sense, it's a software-defined museum. Your tour around is driven by a choose-and-click series of interview-styled "chat with $PERSON". Interviewee will either reply with a video of them telling their memories, or with a comic, as if the events were happening. Occasionally, the comic lets you take over and tasks you with solving a situation. Wrong answers terminate the mini-game, correct answers award coins. You can use coins to replay interview where you made some sort of mistake, terminating the interview early. I don't feel good about this coin mechanic. Its aim is to make the software feel more gamey, but I think it hurts the message of the program. It only allows you to sit through the interview again, and lets you choose different path through it. I don't think your choice "matters", as in "changes the story". Sitting through the interview once might be already enough. You talk with seniors, so their speech is like swimming in honey. Sweet, but you're not really getting anywhere. The young player character doesn't talk, so there is no real dialogue. It's all them talking interrupted by silence. This tedious to boring feeling resonates within comics as well, since you need to click though the "pages". Overall, I'd recommend buying it only with some interest in the era. You need to have inner motivation to power you through. The motivation from the program itself might not be enough.

Beautiful!

It's a wonderful story, knowing what I do about my maternal grandparents and their lives during the war, (luckily they were never deported, my grandfather however was in a russian prison camp) this all feels so familiar, yet different. Fictitious the characters may be, their stories feel real. I can only recommend this game to anyone wanting to know more about the atrocities of WW2.

An interactive museum game experience

‘Attentat 1942’ is a choice-matter adventure game/edutainment, in which you play a grandchild of World War II survivors. Set in Prague in 2001, you investigate what happened to your grandfather after the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. By interviewing key people in his life and looking through memorabilia, you learn more about the oppression of then Nazi German-occupied Czechoslovakia. While the story and characters of ‘Attentat 1942’ are fictional, they’re created around artifacts, accounts, photos and film footages from the days of WWII and the Holocaust. Because the game is played mainly in first-person perspective, it conveys a sense of personal discovery of family history, especially through the full motion videos. The interactive comic strips and mini games add some tension to the personal stories. As you conduct interviews, in-game encyclopedia entries are unlocked. These entries are like those you’d find in a museum, providing more details about a specific person or topic. If WWII and the Holocaust are of interest to you, ‘Attentat 1942’ is a title you should check out; otherwise, you may find the slow pacing and great emphasis on reading historical information somewhat dull. I found the need to unlock encyclopedia entries annoying. You’ll have to repeat interviews (at the expense coins that you earn from playing mini games) to unlock entries that you missed out on. Since you can finish the game without unlocking all entries, this aspect of game design works against educating players about the subject matter. Making your audience figure out how to unlock information is unnecessarily obstructive. ‘Attentat 1942’ crashed on startup for me on several instances, often happening 1 to 3 times before it’d run properly. Yet, they’re just minor annoyances. Overall, I enjoyed the education and interactive museum experience that the game provided. Anyone interested in the Czech perspectives of WWII and the Holocaust will likely find this game appealing.
