Description
Play as ‘Doctor’ Simon Forman - unlicensed medical professional and astrologer - and help him win a medical licence. Astrologaster is a narrative-based comedy game.

Explore Forman’s life, his work, and his relationships with his clients. Make story choices by performing astrological readings. Choose strategically or make decisions just for fun - but be aware that your choices will have consequences (and unpredictable side effects!)

13 clients come to see you 5-7 times seeking advice for personal, professional and medical problems. By examining the stars in the sky, you diagnose and determine answers for your clients’ problems. As well as affecting the storyline, these choices will alter your clients’ satisfaction levels. Satisfied clients will write you letters of recommendation, and with enough of these letters you can obtain a medical licence from the University of Cambridge.

So-called “real” (licensed) doctors call Forman a quack and fraud. Help Forman prove these medical establishment elitists wrong!

Features

  • Perform real* astrology: Examine the sky and choose astrological interpretations that Forman will use to advise his patients. (But remember: astrology is not an exact science!)
  • Solve Hilarious Problems: Consult on problems ranging from Elizabethan terror plots and foul diseases, to romantic entanglements and stolen pies!
  • Change Lives: Win your patients’ favour or ruin their lives. Advise 14 characters who return 5-7 times. Patients have their own ongoing stories which often overlap with each other. Use gossip from some characters to guide and manipulate others.
  • Win A Medical Licence: Convince patients to write letters of recommendations. Collect enough letters to exchange them for a medical licence.
  • Fully Voiced Character Dialogue: Sitcom-style comedy brought to life by a cast of over a dozen actors.
  • Sing Along: Enjoy Renaissance-era music and sing along to each character’s theme song.
  • Casebooks Come Alive: Simon Forman’s cases are presented as a beautiful pop-up book. Turn pages to delve deeper into your patients’ stories.

The Story

London, 1592. A great plague sweeps through the capital. When doctors flee the city in fear, a hero rises. His name is Simon Forman, “Doctor” of Astrology, Astronomy and Physick. Not only does he have the power to cure the sick, he can find their lost pets and predict their futures! All by reading the movements of the stars.

But when the plague ends, Forman’s problems begin. The real doctors return to London and they will stop at nothing to bring him down...

Summary

Astrologaster is a story-driven astrological comedy game set in Shakespeare’s London. Based on a true - and truly ridiculous - story.
Simon Forman was considered a sage by some and a charlatan by others. What will your legacy be? Will you put your faith in the stars?

Pop-up Book Astrology with Cool Music

This is a review of the Steam version. This game is loosely based on the life of Certified RealDoctor (TM) Simon Forman, who was an astrologer in the 1500s. Gameplay consists of hearing a little choir-sung song about a client's problems, listening to a vague description from them (fully voiced), and then selecting a fortune and seeing what happens. Your goal is to get letters of recommendation from satisfied clients (or just select the funniest option). I really liked this game. This was a fascinating time in history, and the game has lots of hints of what was going on then--grand ship exploration, Catholics vs Protestants, *cough* "science" *cough*. The music is madrigal-style with a little choir singing funny lyrics in a roughly 1500s style. Visually, the game looks like a pop-up book, and the effect is really well done. The conversations with clients have frequent dialogue choices, so it's not like a visual novel where you just have nothing to do but read. Only downside is the game is fairly linear; you might be able to replay it once to see other outcomes, but I think it would get tedious after that. I think you will like it if you have an interest in history and are in the mood for light comedy with curiosity-focused gameplay. People seeking challenges, strategy, etc. will be disappointed. Just a note: this game doesn't have fantasy elements, just a historical setting. By the way, the game designers worked with the Simon Forman Casebooks project at Cambridge University, and their site is linked from within the game. You can see actual notes from the doctor himself online (his penmanship is really bad, as is traditional), which are apparently the first documented examples of what went on in medicine in history!

I was hooked!

I played this game straight through because I really loved this game. It is a historical novel in pop-up book fashion that allows you to pick a diagnosis using the astrological discipline known as the four humors. It’s like a pop-up pick-a-patch book. Pros: 1. Rich story. I felt very compelled to keep going and find out what happens next 2. Voice acting is spot on. In a game such as this, voice acting can make or break it. I am happy to say that the voice acting is fantastic 3. I would say that this game has decent replay value. While I beat the game first time up, I am curious to see what happens if I utterly botch everything up for Simon. 4. The makers of the game did their homework. The cases in this game apparently came from Simon’s notebook. Some of the cases are so ridiculous they must be true :P. 5. The writing and music are quite funny. I laughed quite a lot at the story and music, but I must admit that I am fond of choral music as well as that style of humour. Cons: 1. It not hard to beat. There are quizzes regarding the four humors, but they aren’t that hard. The answers are in the stars and planets. 2. This game targets a specific gamer. I can easily see that this game is not for everyone. Anyways, if you like British humour or late 16th / early 17th century British history, you might like this game. Give it a shot; you won’t be out much. TLDR Coitus post Consultatio: 10/10

sweet little historical game

I played Astrologaster and found it great fun. It is 5 hours of amusing historical comedy where you are a "doctor" finding solutions in the stars while trying to get a real medical license. It is entirely voiced and has fun musical bits in between each guest's visit. It is quite simple a game, but for anyone who wants to laugh and enjoys historical content, I would recommend it.

Why Avis? Because she tries harder.

As charming as it is ribald. Not sure how a 16th century astologer knew about Uranus (lol) and Pluto, but the schema are still quite intact. A delightful diversion.

Some roughness around the edges, but fun

Happy to support a small developer! I'll call this a solid 4/5, especially at a sale price. A fun way to enjoy an afternoon, and it features some hilarious singing and voice acting! The pop-up book aesthetic is unique and enjoyable. Some roughness around the edges - rather than the autosave a save or load option would have been appreciated, especially since some early consultations affect much later consultations or have unintended effects later (so if there had been one save slot, for example, there would still be no way to save scum a 'perfect' run one way or another). The final endings of many main characters are pre-determined (I would have liked a chance to change their fates). Also, I could not find any way to fast forward through dialogue other than clicking very fast, which got tedious when I was trying to use the knowledge I got on my first run to do a 'perfect' second run. But overall, lots of fun.
