Asterix and Obelix make an XXL comeback in a Romastered version full of Romans!

The year is 50 B.C. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans. Well, not entirely... One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders. And life is not easy for the Roman legionaries who garrison the fortified camps of Totorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Compendium.

Peace reigns in the small Armorican village, where the villagers go about their daily business. Our two heroes, Asterix and Obelix, hunt wild boar, the blacksmith and the fishmonger quarrel, and the village chief strolls around the village square atop his shield.

After a fine day's hunting, Asterix and Obelix return to find their village in flames, pillaged by the Romans! They set off to rescue their fellow villagers, accompanied by their faithful Dogmatix. Their journey will take them to Normandy, Greece Helvetia, Egypt and, finally, Rome, in order to save the villagers from the clutches of the emperor Caesar...

A Romaster for the fans

Asterix and Obelix XXL originally debut in the early 2000's, and in many ways this game is a quintessential example of how releases in this era looked and played. As such, you can expect LOTS of collecting (Roman helmets in this case), a brawler combat system centered around two buttons and a few basic combos, and also rudimentary puzzle solving. Everything is rather simple, so newbies expecting a more modern, focused system of gameplay will feel that this XXL Romastered doesn't offer enough. On the other hand, if the games from this era was your staple diet growing up, or if you can appreciate older games, you might really enjoy XXL Romastered. The graphics, sound effects and music have been given a magnificent overhaul which you can appreciate by switching between vintage and remastered modes with just the press of a button. It is the exact same experience of the original release, but in a much more aesthetically pleasing package that really enhances the original. There are quite a few bugs, but nothing that even comes close to ruining the experience. This is truly the definitive way to play this game and if you own the two sequels, you should consider finishing your collection.

Amazing remastered

This remastered is really well made, only a few bugs but not anything game breaking (just a few really small thing you will probably not even notice... like there is an enemy with an invisible shield that still works like it had a shield, you can only get the 10° laurien in Normandy if you don't destroy the box on the left of it (you don't need laurien to progress the game and you will start with asterix that cannot destroy that box in that area anyway), 2 crash in all the game). I already said all the bad stuff, on the other end you will get a classic mode that you can trigger at any moment (really awesome) and that you will need to use for challenges (loved this), a great way to play this game on modern system (the original will not work) and to play all this saga (you can get XXL2 and XXL3 here on gog too, and I got a discount for this game because I own the other two (but is just 30 € even at full price)). At this moment I only see one other review (1 star) that talk about a wrong price (40€ instead of 30€ that is the full price of this game) and bugs... Not sure if this game runs bad on other system but I don't think this is so messy that you will notice a thing. I think you should play this game with this remastered, even if it's not a perfect release I saw much worst in games with much bigger budget and I think you will love it.

Decent remaster, but....

Overall, the remaster is quite decent, but does the unforgivable. Namely changes that cannot be reverted to vanilla. From rebalancing, tweaking the collectibles and even introducing some occasional graphical glitches that were not there in the original. Differences: https://aogames.fandom.com/wiki/Asterix_%26_Obelix_XXL:_Romastered_(2020) Problems: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Asterix_%26_Obelix_XXL:_Romastered#Issues_unresolved There is a retro mode, where you can swap the graphics back and even choose the 4:3 aspect ratio, but it won't revert the other gameplay/level changes. Also, the music does not loop properly in retro mode. The new graphics are nice, but pretty different from the original. As for the game itself, it is just the old classic. Mostly a simple game of bashing romans, collecting helmets and laurels and doing some rudimentary puzzles. Mechanics-wise, the game is more aimed at kids, but Asterix fans will have a blast.

A flawed throwback

Nostalgia alone can't really carry this game, aside from the litany of graphical and often times physics glitches and plain bad controls of the boatride sections of the game, bad hit detection for airborn ennemies, amplified while playing with Obelix (landing on a platform with this character can also be a chore), awkwardly placed camera in game as well as in cutscenes, the biggest problem carried from the original remains the free camera, often times in higher difficulties you can find yourself dying through not being able to see the ennemies, or for instance, in the Egypt level, the game being a platformer, it can be exceedingly frustrating to succeed landing on crates surrounded by lava. Graphically, some sections do look more better and modern, though the original, striking a different chord, has a more cartoonish look, closer to the comic strip. Still a nice trip bag down memories lane. I concur it is better deserving of a 3/5, the remaster tag not really living up to its name, set aside the graphical overhaul, though as I think most the comments state, it probably remains a pick-up for those having played it as a kid. It most definitely carried its age and every flaw.
