Casual but Excellent Spectacle Fighter

Many spectacle fighters like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, have multiple weapons to choose from, each with their own moveset. They're also demanding when grading the player's ability to master their mechanics. Assault Spy doesn't have quite as large a moveset, and isn't nearly so strict, but it's still more than capable of keeping you entertained. I enjoy spectacle fighters like the ones mentioned above and Metal Gear Rising, but I'm not particularly GOOD at them; middling at best. But I feel more competent at Assault Spy. Asaru's and Amelia's smaller movesets (compared to other games) makes them easier to fully grasp and master (though there's still plenty of moves to buy with your hard-earned points), while its comparatively more lenient grading system makes it easy to get A's (but you'll need to work hard to earn your S and SSS ranks). It's still plenty of fun; you can pull off some crazy combos with both characters, both of which have launchers, some form of teleportation (Amelia has two), and high-speed dashes and attacks. There doesn't seem to be much difference between Easy and Normal mode, up until near the end of each character's chapter, where the difficulty noticeably ramps up on Normal My main complaint about the game is more a pet peeve; characters will have conversations during gameplay, which are exclusively in Japanese. Subtitles are provided, but you likely will have a hard time looking at both the action and the subtitles. All in all, I really enjoyed the game. Get the Elite Spy Editon so you snag the rockin' soundtrack too.

Devil May Cry by just one guy?!!

Assault Spy is a stylish brawler with a combat system that feels like a merging of Devil May Cry with the Platinum Games. It takes place in a comedy of errors themed around the stressful life of a corporate salaryman. It's mind-boggling that this is an indie game by just one creator. You play a corporate espionage agent saddled with a useless trainee who keeps blowing his cover and forcing him to engage in flashy battles against security robots that look like smartphones, segways, and other pieces of soulless corporate furniture come to life. You can also unlock a second character who's a female CIA agent with a somewhat less mobile but heavier firepower fighting style. This game makes a poor first impression because the menus and in-engine cutscenes are very amateurish. But once you start actually fighting it becomes clear the bulk of the graphical flair went to the combat effects. Like most games in the genre you start out with only a couple basic combos then have to earn money to unlock new moves. Fortunately unlocked moves carry over between difficulty levels and new game plus. Gameplay-wise this is the most impressive stylish brawler to come out of the indie scene since Aztez. It uses a timing-based combo switching system like DMC, but also perfect-timed versions of moves to discourage mindless button-mashing. Enemy step and other more advanced moves are unlockable as well. Character space in this review is limited for me to go over the full system, so check out some of the combo videos already online to see the fully unlocked game in action. Besides the amateurish vibe of the visuals, the biggest problem with this game is the camera. Protip: the lock-on button is your friend. Also a personal gripe I have with the game is several moves involve pushing two buttons at the same time and that makes some moves very awkward to pull off with two face buttons. If you understand it's a one-dev game, it's the best stylish brawler on gog right now.

Unfinished

I wish I could see what others see in this game. I also have a love for action/spectacle fighters games, and although there is indeed a good fundamental system here, and it is admirable that it was made by a tiny team, this is a game being sold by a price in which you can buy dozens of other much more rich, polished games. And by that price I cannot justify the state of unfinish this game demonstrates. It's an incredibly short game, the enemy variety is severely lacking, battle arenas are huge with no purpose, and the battle system, although good, feels like it only has the basic moves. It looks like a project in mid-development or a promising prototype/early access, but it's being sold as a finished product and that's what I'm reviewing, which is not a very good final product.

Paul Allen's Devil May Cry

Look at that laser-focused combat design, featuring a character that iterates on the Judgement Cut JUST system throughout his whole moveset - while also presenting a character with an entirely unique moveset to contrast him. The tasteful use of samples in its techno/j-rock soundtrack, reminiscent of both Keniichi Okabe and Hideki Naganuma . Oh my God, it even has a Bloody Palace...

Short and Simple

This is a very short and simple fighting game. It's built around your character doing a bunch of combos and crazy attacks. All the stages are linear, and you have two characters to choose from. The voices are in Japanese, but the text is in English. There's not much here, but it's fun to play for a while. This will probably take you an hour or two. It gets a bit repetitive, but the game is not very long. Not much to say here. It's just a standard quick run around and bash things game with a silly story attached.
