Description
Assassin’s Creed® is a game that redefined the action-adventure genre. With photo-realistic graphics, an advanced physics model, and a nearly fanatical attention to detail, this title was able to begin a new chapter in gaming history. However, the excellent technical aspects are only half of the reason why it became so popular; the other half is the story.

While you technically play the game as Desmond Miles, the main focus of the game takes place elsewhere. The year is 1191: Jerusalem, the middle of the Third Crusade. You are a member of a mysterious order of assassins where you have trained your whole life to do one thing and one thing only – to kill. The recently growing influence of the Order of the Knights Templar disturbs the delicate balance of power in the region and therefore directly threatens The Brotherhood. The clash of the two most powerful organizations in Jerusalem at the time has the most unexpected consequences and triggers devastating events that threaten the world itself, and you – Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad – are in the middle of all this.
  • Well-constructed story that will pleasantly surprise you many times along the way.
  • Impressive level of interaction with the environment – crowds react to what you do and act accordingly.
  • Open world gameplay lets you to decide how and when to achieve objectives, where to go, and gives you nearly complete freedom to get there.

Repetition

This game came out with a lot of hype and rightfully so; it did something that hadn't been done before, with a new but still intuitive control scheme (at least for consoles) and an interesting story. Unfortunately, that's all this game ended up being. Potential. It starts out well. The free climbing mechanic makes you feel like Spiderman without the web, and stealthily stabbing a target with your hidden blade is seriously satisfying. But this is all you end up doing. Side missions, to gather "information" about your target, boil down to 3 or 4 types that get old REALLY fast. And the information is mostly useless anyhow; I could never find a way to kill one of my targets without somebody noticing and it was, in all cases, simply easier to just run up, stab him and run away again, eventually losing the guards that are apparently almost as skilled at free climbing as I am, however that makes sense. Ultimately, this game just ends up being boring. It has its moments, especially early on, but the repetition sucks any enjoyment you might have been having by about the half way mark. And that is something the admittedly dazzling visuals can't compensate for. My opinion? Take the $20 this game costs you and buy the 2nd one instead. It's far superior and arguably the best of the entire franchise.

Big ambitions, poor outcome

Idea of AC was a breath of fresh air. Playing as a non-white protagonist and exploring different culture of Middle East with real cities rebuilt in the game is truly unique. This game introduced parkur mechanism and it is enjoyable to jumping roofs. What really drags AC down are two things: 1) A lack of story layers - Let me explain. The game felt way too long and repetitive. Moments including a story, either main or unique side story, are sparse. You will spend much time running, climbing and jumping around without any real progress in the story. 2) No subtitles - If English isn't your native language and you don't understand spoken English perfectly or you are hearing impaired, you won't enjoy the story. Almost everybody speaks with a heavy accent, people speak to you during battle roar. I would give 2/5 to this game because it wasn't really enjoyable gaming experience. I had to force myself to play AC. I missed plot details sometimes because a lack of subtitles and occasional bad sound balance, so I had to search for transcript. I don't want to play it again. However I didn't. Why? Because I stared in silent awe when I climbed on the highest tower in 12th century Damascus and saw that epic panorama of recreated real city. I like to listen to the great soundtrack. I liked to play as Syrian and meet Muslim characters who aren't terrorists for once. And because it opened doors and provided necessary background to the greatest episode in the series - Assassin's Creed 2.

Repetition is fun!

Well, not really. Repetition is one of two problems of 'Screed - every mission is the same, and the side-quests are all just of four variations. This gets old really fast. The other problem is the ending, which is disappointing in that after a whole game of sneaking, blending and quiet assassinations is just one big fight-fest. But the plots, characters and truly gorgeous environment are all very strong points! And, fortunately, 'Screed 2 takes very good care of all that repetition.

Overall Good Experience

This game started it all and brought a lot of innovation when it first came out. Climbing all the buildings the 3 massive cities have from the poor to the rich districts. The overall story of Assassin's Creed is quite original and mysterious at times. However the gameplay is quite repetitive and there is no sense of progress in the story inside the Animus, just about killing your 9 targets while doing the same activities trying to track them down. Combat system is good and flows well. Overall, the game is fun at times but don't expect much to change after killing your target, you'll pretty much be doing the same thing after but in another city.
