Description
ART OF FIGHTING 2 sees 12 characters compete for the title in the toughest fighting contest of them all: King of Fighters. Each character has a range of deadly techniques in his/her arsenal, and players must use these lethal techniques to fight their opponents.

As in the original ART OF FIGHTING, however, using a deadly technique lowers a character’s mental-energy gauge. Meanwhile, players can taunt an opponent to exhaust his/her mental energy, and even suppress his/her techniques. Furthermore, an attack will become stronger or weaker depending on exactly when the button is pressed. And even if a player is thrown, defensive action is possible with the timely press of a button.

All of this adds up to an intense and nail-biting fighting-game experience not found anywhere else!

Horrible port

I remember playing the Art of Fighting games in the arcades and enjoying them a lot, but this game is absolutely unplayable. Why? You can only use keyboard controls and they can't even be remapped!? Of course they are mapped horribly. The arrow keys are your directional movement (forward, back, crouch and jump) which any fighting game fan will immediately know makes it nearly impossible to do special moves where you have to do a quarter, half or full circle! A (punch) and B (kick) are mapped to X and C while C (throw) and D (taunt) are mapped to the Q and W keys making it difficult to quickly and properly switch from punch/kick to throw/taunt. It just blows my mind how DotEmu thought that this would be acceptable for any game let alone a fighting game that requires quick and responsive movement! Avoid this port at all costs!

Bad Port, Bad Game, Bad Emulation

They should do something about portability. It is urgent that they change the emulator. As for the game itself, unfortunately I think it is highly overrated. There is a very annoying mechanic of this snk game: the pulse of the buttons, pressing them to change of hit or intensity. I do not understand how existing 6 button machines, they could not mold them. This greatly hinders its gameplay. Finally, it is an impossible game to finish. To play it, I had to install another emulator and do the impossible. I really don't know why I played it ...

A dinosaur newcomers should avoid

I grew up dreaming about playing these kinds of games. Back in the days, the Neo Geo was called "the Rolls-Royce of video game consoles". Not only was it extremely expensive, but the games were on a technical level way ahead of anything that could be achieved on the Snes or Genesis/MegaDrive. Gigantic sprites, unrivaled fluidity, a myriad of colors and details, great sound effects, and special visual effects like zoom ins/zoom outs. It may sound trivial today, but back then, the kid I was would have done almost anything to play these games. And indeed, when I could finally try these games (on emulators, shame on me), I did not care about the gameplay or anything else : toying with gigantics sprites was enough to get some fun. I was actually playing a bad game, but I didn't care. Art of Fighting 2 is perhaps the most brillant example of these games that made kids daydream about them despite being, on a purely gameplay point of view, completely unplayable. The A.I. in single player was simply made to react to anything you press. I mean the A.I. in AoF2 is cheap, like Mortal Kombat 2 level of cheapness. And if you've ever played MK2 single player, you know what it means. The only way to win is to cheese the A.I. Basically there is only one way to beat your opponents (except maybe for a few). Beat Temjin by jumping and kicking rince and repeat. Beat Yuri by crouching/blocking, wait for her butt attack (yeah...) and sweep her, rince and repeat. You get the idea. Once you've figured out how to cheese your opponent, you can win almost 100% of the time. But there just is no appeal to it. That or you take a beating. No appeal either + frustration. If you are curious and want to try for yourself one of the most impressive and yet unplayable games of the Neo Geo, or if you are nostalgic, maybe wait for a sale. If you want a genuinely good Neo Geo game, you will be better off with a Samurai Shodown or King of Fighters game. PS : I did not play the GOG release.
