Description
ArmA is a first person tactical military shooter with an emphasis on realism and simulation. This game features a blend of large-scale military conflict spread over vast areas alongside the more traditional closed quarters battle. The player is thrust in the midst of an engaging and expanding storyline, fighting against smart, aggressive enemies who will continually provide a challenge over a massive landscape.

This is the second installment of the acclaimed ArmA series. It takes all that is best from its predecessor and improves it creating a nearly perfect combat simulator. Make no mistake, this is not a standard FPS shooter where every event is scripted and all you have to do is pull a trigger at the right moments. Here it is your job to come up with a plan and execute it with the resources that are currently at your disposal, and when the fighting is done and all objectives are met there is this satisfying feeling of victory that was not handed to you but truly earned.

Features:

  • ArmA Gold includes “ArmA: Armed Assault” and its expansion “Queen's Gambit.”
  • Huge selection of playable military and civilian gear including APC’s, tanks, boats, helicopters, fighter planes, and many more
  • Gigantic and very detailed maps with over 400sq. km of terrain to wage your battles on
  • Experience war with over 100 soldiers on the battlefield and create your own conflicts using the build-in mission editor.

Only LAN multiplayer is supported.

A slow burner, but worth it

Arma: Armed Assault is the spiritual successor to Bohemia Interactive's Flashpoint game, which changed the name due to legal issues with BI's previous publisher - Codemasters. Name aside, Arma plays and feels much like OFP, with the same radio commands, the same clunky movement animations, and even the same AI features. To me, the similarity is more of an advantage since the game can be notoriously complex and non-user-friendly. Strangely enough, I didn't experience a lot of bugs, except for the AI... Like honestly, the friendly AI is braindead to the point of it being easier to Switch teams and do everything yourself instead of waiting for these idiots to respond. At the same time, the enemies can magically spot and kill you from across the map or not notice you within two meters - it's infuriating. Storywise, the game offers some variability, letting you play the missions in the order you choose, which will influence the plot and the difficulty of some objectives. It is a welcome change to the standard formula, but the story and characters are nowhere near as interesting as in Operation Flashpoint. For the story, I suggest Queen's Gambit, which is shorter and much more exciting and memorable than the main plot. The music is generic, and the voiceovers are fine, I guess, but the acting doesn't carry the weight of the story, so it doesn't look believable. Overall, this game deserves some love, even though the multiplayer is long dead, but the maps are great, the gameplay feels familiar, and the sense of freedom it provides is incredible. It's a slow burner, but if you have the patience, it is worth your time and money!

A nice step up from the OPF

In many things is a nice step up from the original game. The Island is a very good playground for an unlimited amount of missions and fan creations. The campaign is definitely inferior to previous game, but is interesting and on par with many non historical games of the era. Graphics are better than OPF, but movement and gameplay wise feels worse for some reason, not a deal breaker but is something to note. Given that GOG doesn't have ARMA 2 nor ARMA 3 this is a good investment if you liked the original game, doesn't have the soul of the original game, but it was a good attempt to keep the franchise on the spotlight (at least to realistic shooter enthusiast) for ARMA 2 to exist and everything that came after.

Even free is expensive

Its terrible, everything is bugged. Missions that don't complete, tutorials that don't work, guys that cross walls like ghosts and get stuck on them, guys shooting to you through walls...the only good thing is the work that they put on the factions and maps, but is wasted here. Hope they remake it someday on Reforger engine for good, because this is unplayable.

Slow and interesting

I came from Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising to this game and it's still good and interesting. Tips: - In the first destroy-convoy-mission, check your car to get more mines and rockets. - You can lower the difficulty of the AI to match it to OFDR. - In the armory you can see all units, weapons and vehicles and try them out.
