A new threat casts its shadow over the Southern Isles. A mysterious demon, consumed by hatred, terrifies the population and pools his force against the coastal city of Setarrif. The dramatic situation exacerbates after a volcanic eruption in the mountains nearby. Thereupon the nameless hero joins forces with his strongest allies and courageously faces the new menace.
Even after king Rhobar III was freed from the demon's control, the struggle apparently is not over. The king already ordered his armies to conquer Setarrif, but so far no word from his troops, or the frantic population for that matter, has gotten through.
Experience an all new adventure amidst demonic powers, political intrigue and inscrutable incidents – what’s really going on in Setarrif?
Stand-alone expansion
Playing time: 4 – 8 hours
Experience a new, compelling part of the chronicles of Argaan
Play parts of the story from your famous allies’ perspective
All new enemies as well as new armors and weapons to further expand and hone your combat skills
Meet new, lively characters when exploring the (yet) unknown regions & dungeons
Import your character from the main game (with a character that killed the end boss of ArcaniA)
The story picks up right after the end of Arcania, you can import your save from there too. Feels like a cut content from Arcania. Didn't understand anything of the story, you don't really need any equipment aside from starting gear from previous game. Gold is useless, crafting is useless (crafted 1 helmet). Just 1 side quest. 4 hours play time and I did everything. Personally I was ok with it since I paid 1.99$ for it, but at full price it's a rip-off.
... of the Gothic franchise. What shall I write? I just killed the end boss with the help of a gladly game fault. He was freezed, sticked to another enemy and I could wipe him out with a bow. Hooray, it's over, I don't need a further attempt with my weak built up firemage in this situation. Before this end boss the firemage was a real killing machine!? I played on difficulty hard.
This game has average outworld graphics and absolute big and ugly dungeons. Most of the game the artwork is really bad. The soundtrack and sound system is nice except the awful dialogues of the people standing stupid around in this world. Most time I clicked the mortifying story plot away. Forget about the primitive mission goals. Story and goals were fantasy cheap goods.
Does anybody know if Setarrif uses the same magical scroll like in the dungeon-crawler stonekeep? Why not carry endless loot like weapons, armors, potions, collected raw materials, gems, ... ? You must have a magical 40-ft-container on your back and you can easily fight, jump and roll through this world with it. When I reached the first merchant of the ugly city I already had a hundred close combat weapons, which I could sell for a few health potions.
Fighting against the varying bestiary is always the same, but brought some fun. The chosen magician could kill most enemies with fireballs or with fireballs and sword in the last part of the battles. The game looks like a construction kit with it's endless corridors.
I don't know why I can't change my reviews at gog? I would now give the main game Arcania 1 star more, which means 2 stars on the whole, but not for this Setarrif standalone.
I wouldn´t say it is the best Gothic they ever made, but it sure is a lot better than the third one. Gothic 3 was nearly unplayable if you didnt install certain stuff to improve handling and so forth. Arcania on the other hand has smooth controls, vivid graphics and a story that fits into Gothic. Lets not overexaggerate ; Gothic 2 still is, in my opinion, the better Game. But im pretty sure a big part of this is nostalgia and the fact that at the time Gothic 2 came out, there was hardly any other Game comparable. Overall Arcania is a very solid game, and I cannot respect people who trashtalk this game. Nearly every part of their critic is just cynic and has no actual point. If you have played other Gothic-Games before, make sure to pick this one up, too.
