Another World: 20th Anniversary Edition

Another World, or as I remember it, Out of this World is a platform puzzle style game. Back in the day, the graphics and presentation were really great although I remember the game Flashback showing it up, which I believe was newer but the same style game play and presentation. This is good for a play through for the older gamer crowd. If you haven't played this before and you are younger, you may not like it at all. The controls are clunky and there really isn't much going on story wise. The one thing I do miss is the music from the 3DO version. Some of the backgrounds were better on the 3DO also. Over all, this is a decent game if you have that nostalgia factor for it.

Another World is one of those games you never forget. It is elegant in almost every way. Gameplay is simple yet allows complex maneuvers. And the story manages to convey a spectrum of emotions without a single line of dialog. At it's heart it is more a puzzle then a platformer and it is too damn short. That's part of its charm, yes. But all the people I know who played it, wanted more. Perhaps that is as good a recommendation as any game would aspire to.

Another World is a true classic and the game play, graphics and audio (although slightly updated) still shine after 20 years. It is amazing to think that this games was released back in 1991. I used to play it on my Amiga 500 and then with UAE. This 15th Anniversary Edition works perfectly with Wine under Linux.

The only thing I can tell about this game: It is extremely frustrating. Because it appears that an integral part of the game is apparently that you'll die. And then you die - and when you've died you'll die again, enter the next screen and... well, guess what... dying once more. And you have to repeat several parts of the scene when you got killed... And the worst is that your sudden screen-death is not foreseeable. No sorry - if there is a good story behind it - the gameplay prevented me from seeing much of this story. I played for an hour - and then deleted it. Money wasted. Here's my tip for this game: Don't buy it if you don't like to be frustrated to the bones - it's not worth the hype. Bought it when it was on sale - but I honestly regret it.

I never played it before but I can easily imagine how incredible it must have been at the time of its release. Nowadays though, I can only recommend it to people that are very interested in the history of video games, because if you didn't play it in the past and there's no nostalgia to soften the experience, it will probably be more difficult to enjoy. Its approach to difficulty is very different to what gamers are used to these days.
