Welcome to Anachronox, an abandoned alien artificial planet at the centre of the universe, now home to lowlifes, thieves, and scoundrels. Here we join Sylvester "Sly Boots" Bucelli--a down on his luck PI--and a cast of 6 other unlikely heroes on their quest to discover who or what is trying to destroy the universe. They are the only ones that believe it is happening, and the only ones that can do something about it.
This title is a very unique game in many ways. The combination of jRPG style turn-based combat, extraordinary characters with their own personalities, an epic and brilliantly told story, colorful graphics, and absolutely hilarious humor is something very rare. You will travel through galaxies, explore bizarre planets, and journey through space and time. There are no easy choices in this game, no obvious, predictable events, no black and white characters. This complexity made the game well reviewed--it has showed up on PC Gamer's Top 100 PC Games list three times!--and will keep you fascinated and amazed for many hours.
Great mix of Japanese and Western style RPG elements with great humor, a gripping story, and a very unique cast of characters.
Excellent storytelling via professional-quality cutscenes and dialogue will accompany you through the entire 50+ hour long adventure.
Huge world to explore with many secrets to discover and mysteries to solve. One playthrough is, by far, not enough to see it all.
You know how disappointed you are that fire-fly didn't make it? You'll be equally disappointed when you see the end of this game and realize they never made a sequel. Probably my favorite game ever.
This game was so highly underrated it's a crime. Outstanding turn base "JRPG" style gameplay that doesn't actually suck like nearly every JRPG since FF IX. Amazing characters, some of the best writing for a game since Planescape: Torment and addictive gameplay make Anachronox one of my all time favorite RPG's on the PC, and among the only JRPG style game on the PC that's worth playing. And it's definitely worth playing.
If you like the JRPG style of gameplay without the terribly annoying, brooding, emo, drama filled whine-fest, shallow characters that comes from Japanese game writing, Anachronox is for you!
Just as one of fellow reviewers here, I had problems getting into the game initially. No, nothing technical either, just wouldn't "click in" initially... I think my main issue with the game was the jRPG style - I'm not a fan and it took me a while to get dragged into the narrative. Boy, was that worth it...
This game is unique. Not only because its planned sequel never got made, but also because it is an unusual mix of RPG, comedy, romance and tragedy (quirky and sometimes dark sense of humour prevailing). All that in a scifi package.
The story is quite complex, not going to spoil anything in here, and borrows a lot from Douglas Adams-style storytelling ("The Hitchhiker's Guide). Add some Terry Pratchett, some epic scifi adventures worthy of Babylon 5 and unforgettable characters, and you get Anachronox.
A real treat, I'm so happy to see it on GOG :)
Weak graphics, bugs and imperfect controls, but Holy Shit, it's a very solid RPG, with a great atmosphere, a solid story and a rampant humor. Must Buy.
I missed this little gem when it came out. The first time I heard of it was about 2 months ago, when I bought it. I'm sad I missed it. It could have made my morose, pathetic college life a bit more entertaining.
